    Hello,

I am not sure when the 'apostafest' is happening in Florida but if it is over the next few days remember that Pat Metheny is in town. Do not lose a chance to see Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays perform. I saw them recently and can tell you he is in prime form at the moment. Truly an astonishing guitarist / composer - in fact worth flying from England to see even without the delectable gift of meeting many JWD posters...

He did a cover of "Third Stone from the Sun" that I liked. I could never get into his original stuff though, not rock 'n roll enough for my tastes I guess. His technical ability is without question though.

Do you like Joe Satriani Hillary_Step?

    Dan,

Do you like Joe Satriani Hillary_Step?

Yes, I do. He is another very gifted guitarist who has already built up a huge body of commendable work.

I first saw Pat Metheny in the late 70's and was very impressed with his guitar technique, but more so with his compositions. It is still his compositions that enthrall me. Each album he does stands unchallanged in its own inspiring fretboard territory.

Another couple of guitarists worth listening to are Franco Mussida who plays with 'P.F.M.' an Italian prog. band and Alan Holdsworth, a UK Jazz guitarist who cut his teeth in one of the most underrated Rock bands of all time, Jon Hiseman's 'Tempest'. They produced an album in '75 that was and is years ahead of its time. Jeff Beck continually promotes Holdsworth's virtues.

    Alan & Xena,

Yes, I could not agree more. I have lost count of the times I have seen him live, but at the moment he is touring with an African guitarist / percussionist and a superb Chinese trumpet player, as well of course with Lyle Mays. You would run out of superlatives to describe their sound. I got to have coffee with Metheny last time he was in Seattle, a gap of more than twenty years and several million earned dollars ( on his part! ) ago. He is exactly the same man now as then, totally unspoiled by fame.

    Hillary,

Eddie Van Halen always cited Holdsworth as an influence, he was pretty much in awe of him ("he can do with one hand what it takes me to do with 2" he would say). I'm not familiar with his material at all, any starting points you might recommend? I would ask the same about Metheny, I signed out "American Garage" from the library once and it didn't grab me, but maybe that isn't his best work.

LOL @ Gumby. I think that you would know these artists if you were into a guitars. I think that most people don't know who they are. You aren't alone , you're just guitar illiterate!

    Dan,

Holdsworth did some astonishing stuff with 'SoftMachine'. Try the 'Bundles' album - you will be amazed. He blends a softness of style with a very meaty sound. I really like the first album with Jon Hiseman's 'Tempest' that he played on, it is just called 'Tempest'. Jimmy Page admitted to being in awe of Holdsworth's riffs in that album.

As to Metheny, I enjoy 'Secret Story' very much. The opening song has a choir of Cambodian children singing the Cambodian Peace Song to intro his guitar. Not much bad on that album at all.

If you are really into guitarists try to track down the work of a UK guitarist called Terry Smith. He is a Jazz guitarist who formed a Jazz/Rock band named 'IF' in the late 60's. A phenomenal guitarist. The first three albums are the best albums. Watch out for 'Here Comes Mr. Time', a real guitar inspiration.

    Be good - HS
