    Honestly.......... I really don't know.

The only thing I do know is I do now, and when I do.....it feels good to give to others.

I know I have been down on my luck and ppl have helped me out before and I didn't even know them.

This is an example of what I am talking about..............

Hope you read the whole post...........I read it again and it still brings tears to my eyes remembering how much the "charity" meant to me that yr.

    what a heart-warming story.

I am not able to grant the wish for "an angel on a tree" cos we don't have that kind of trees here.
But I got the overal image and when something is to be placed on my way, I will remember your story.

We were taught that giving to any charity other than the WTS was wrong. After all, the charity was worldly. And if it were worldly, then it wasn't Christian. If it were not Christian, then it must be of the devil.

Thus, anything not directly linked to the witnesses was of the devil. You could apply this to anything that the WTS believes.

I was told that giving to "worldly" charities-even stuff like the food bank, with no religious affiliations, was "making beds in a burning building"-a pointless waste of time, better spent knocking on doors. What a crock. Why did I ever listen to such selfish crap? So now I tend to overcompensate by spreading myself too thin with charity fundraisers. I hope to find some sense of balance soon, but I guess it's better to be too altruistic than too uncaring, if I must go to one extreme or the other.

I might try the charity thing this xmas. Might be a good way to spit on the WT's grave.

If the charity involved does not directly conflict with Bible principles Jehovah's Witness dogma, then it is a personal choice as to whether to give or not. No JW would give to the Red Cross, for example, because then you'd be contributing to the "blood industry". And you couldn't buy poppies to support your local American Legion on that day when they sell them, because you'd be violating your "Christian neutrality".

However if something more neutral like the American Cancer Society came along, it seemed okay.

Just remember though, your first priority as a JW is to give to the Worldwide Preaching Work. For how else will people be reached with the good news of the Kingdom the doomsday message of the WTS?

Twenty years ago, we were discouraged from giving any contributions to charitable organizations. It was reasoned that we could do much more good by contributing to the Watchtower Society because people would find "everlasting life" instead of temporary help in this "old system of things."

It was definately wrong to give to any religious organization, such as the Salvation Army, because of their association with "Babylon the Great."

If only the Watchtower had followed the example of the Salvation Army and other churches in providing food, clothing and assistance to the poor and needy, it might have followed in the footsteps of Christ. It's so good to have left the narrow view of Jehovah's Witnesses behind and to be able to contribute from the heart to some of these worthy causes.

No they do not -- all are actively contribute what they would give to charity to the worldwide work - do not think it is a disfellowshipping offence though
