    The Desolation Of Egypt

    Jeremiah 43:8-13
Then the word of Yhwh came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying, "Take large stones in your hands and hide them in the mortar in the brick which is at the entrance of Pharaoh's palace in Tahpanhes in the sight of some Jewish men and say to them, 'Thus says Yhwh of hosts, the god of Israel, "Behold, I am going to send and get Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babel, my servant, and I am going to set his throne over these stones that I have hidden; and he will spread his canopy over them. He will also come and strike the land of Egypt. Those who are for death, to death, and those for captivity, to captivity, and those for the sword, to the sword. And I shall set fire to the temples of the gods of Egypt, and he will burn them and take them captive. So he will wrap himself with the land of Egypt as a shepherd wraps himself with his garment, and he will depart from there safely. He will also shatter the obelisks of the House of the Sun, which is in the land of Egypt; and the temples of the gods of Egypt he will burn with fire.'"
    Jeremiah 46:13
The message which Yhwh spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the coming of Nebuchadnezzar; king of Babel, to smite the land of Egypt:
    Jeremiah 46:19
"Make your baggage ready for exile, O daughter dwelling in Egypt, for Noph will become a desolation. It will even be burned down, bereft of inhabitants."
    Jeremiah 46:25-26
Yhwh of hosts, the god of Israel says, "Behold, I am going to punish Niwt-Imn and Pharaoh and Egypt along with her gods and her kings, even Pharaoh and those who trust in him. And I shall give them over to the power of those who are seeking their lives, even into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babel, and into the hand of his officers."
    Ezekiel 29:1-2
"In the tenth year, in the tenth month, on the twelfth of the month, the word of Yhwh came to me saying, 'Son of man, set your face against Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and prophesy against him and against all Egypt.'"
    Ezekiel 29:9
"...the land of Egypt will become a desolation and a waste."
    Ezekiel 29:10
"...I will make the land of Egypt an utter waste and desolation from Migdol to Syene and even to the border of Kash."
    Ezekiel 29:11
"A man's foot will not pass through it and the foot of a beast will not pass through it, and it will not be inhabited for forty years."
    Ezekiel 29:12
"...And her cities, in the midst of cities that are laid waste, will be desolate forty years; and I shall scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them among the lands."
    Ezekiel 29:13-15
"...At the end of forty years, I shall gather the Egyptians from the peoples among whom they were scattered. And I shall turn the fortunes of Egypt and shall make them return to the land of Pathrusi, to the land of their origin; and there they will be a lowly kingdom. It will be the lowest of the kingdoms; and it will never again lift itself above the nations. And I shall make them so small that they will not rule over the nations."
    Ezekiel 29:17
"In the twenty-seventh year, in the first month, on the first of the month, the word of Yhwh came to me saying,"
    Ezekiel 29:18
"Son of man, Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babel, made his army labor hard against Tyre...but he and his army had no wages from Tyre for the labor he had performed against it." (see Ezekiel 26:7-14)
    Ezekiel 29:19
"Therefore...I shall give the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babel, and he will carry off her wealth and capture her spoil and seize her plunder, and it will be wages for his army."
    Ezekiel 30:10-12
"Thus says the lord Yhwh, 'I will also make the multitude of Egypt cease by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babel. He and his people with him, the most ruthless of nations, will be brought in to destroy the land and they will draw their swords against Egypt and fill the land with the slain. Moreover, I will make the Nile canals dry and sell the land into the hands of evil men. And I will make the land desolate, and all that is in it, by the hand of strangers; I, Yhwh, have spoken.'" (Also read Ezekiel 30:13-19)
    Ezekiel 32:11-14
"For thus says the lord Yhwh, 'The sword of the king of Babel shall come upon you. By the swords of the mighty ones I will cause your multitudes to fall; all of them are tyrants of the nations. And they shall devastate the pride of Egypt and all its multitude shall be destroyed. I will also destroy all its cattle from beside the waters; and the foot of man shall not muddy them anymore. And the hoofs of beasts shall not muddy them. Then I will make their waters settle, and will cause their rivers to run like oil.' declares the lord Yhwh."

These words of supposed prophecy failed as Egypt was never conquered by Nebuchadnezzar nor ever made desolate.

i find myself having to disagree with you, pete. for example, Daniel 2:37-38 says:

37 You, O king, the king of kings, you to whom the God of heaven has given the kingdom, the might, and the strength and the dignity, 38 and into whose hand he has given, wherever the sons of mankind are dwelling, the beasts of the field and the winged creatures of the heavens, and whom he has made ruler over all of them, you yourself are the head of gold.

the sort of rule which Babylon exercised can be appraised by those words spoken to Nebuchadnezzar. In verse 37, his being dubbed "king of kings" suggests that he ruled over all other kings of his day. in verse 38, Nebuchadnezzar is shown to have been "made ruler over all" of mankind, "wherever" they might have dwelt. agreeably, a comment in Revelation--Its Grand Climax At Hand!, page 137 states: "... when Babylon was overthrown by the armies of Cyrus, and its king made an abrupt descent from world rulership to shameful defeat...." yes, according to the Scriptures, Babylon too ruled the "world" of its day!

in view of the above, how can you say that "Egypt was never conquered by Nebuchadnezzar"?

    Adam

Just one of many, many, many prophesies in the OT that were totaly false. The god of the OT has a crappy track record. Dunno about anybody else, but I like my dieties to know a little more about the future than this guy.

    Genesis:

God says that if Adam eats from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, then the day that he does so, he will die. But later Adam eats the forbidden fruit ( 3:6 ) and yet lives for another 930 years ( 5:5 ). 2:17

As a punishment for killing Abel, God says Cain will be "a fugitive and a vagabond." Yet in just a few verses ( 4:16-17 ) Cain will settle down, marry, have a son, and build a city. This is not the activity one would expect from a fugitive and a vagabond. 4:12

God promises Abram and his descendants all of the land of Canaan. But both history and the bible ( Acts 7:5 and Heb.11:13 ) show that God's promise to Abram was not fulfilled. 13:15 , 15:18 , 17:8 , 28:13-14

Contrary to the prophecy in 48:21 , Joseph died in Egypt, not Israel. Gen.50:24

    Deuteronomy:

God says that the Israelites will destroy all of the peoples they encounter. But according to Joshua ( 15:63 , 16:10 , 17:12-13 ) and Judges ( 1:21 , 27-36 , 3:1-5 ) there were some people they just couldn't kill. 7:24

This verse says that Ai was never again occupied after it was destroyed by Joshua. But Nehemiah ( 7:32 ) lists it among the cities of Israel at the time of the Babylonian captivity. 8:28

    2 Samuel:

God says that Solomon's kingdom will last forever. It didn't of course. It was entirely destroyed about 400 years after Solomon's death, never to be rebuilt. 7:13, 16

    2 Kings:

In Jeremiah ( 34:4 ) God tells Zedekiah that he will die in peace and be buried with his fathers. But this verse and Jer.52:10-11 say that he died a violent death in a foreign land. 25:7

    Isaiah:

These verses falsely predict that Babylon will never again be inhabited. 13:19-20

This verse prophesies that Damascus will be completely destroyed and no longer be inhabited. Yet Damascus has never been completely destroyed and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities. 17:1

This verse predicts that there shall be five cities in Egypt that speak the Canaanite language. But that language was never spoken in Egypt, and it is extinct now. 19:18

    Jeremiah:

God says he is going to punish Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonians for what they have done to his people -- even though God Himself is the one who made the Babylonians attack and enslave Judah! As part of the punishment God will take the land of the Babylonians and "make it perpetual desolations." A false prophecy, since present-day Iraq is quite occupied. 25:12

    Hi there Schizm.

in view of the above, how can you say that "Egypt was never conquered by Nebuchadnezzar"?

Simply because it wasn't. In fact a quick look at any history book shows that Babylon was never a 'World Empire'. To the bible a world empire seems to be any foreign power who had control over Palestine.

Babylon was one of several states that fought with each other during the 6th century BCE including Egypt, Lydia, Media, and Scythia. An alliance of Medes, Scythians and Babylonians had destroyed the Assyrian Empire by about 609BCE. Egypt and Babylon then fought over Syria and Palestine with the Babylonians being victorious at Carchemish in 605BCE. But when Nebuchadnezzar marched against Egypt in 601BCE he was turned away at the border with heavy casualties on each side. Nebuchadnezzar kept power through a series of treaties with northern Media.

The real 'World Power' was the Persian Empire. Under Cyrus the Persians brought first Media then Babylon under Persian rule. It was Cyrus' son Cambyses who finally conquered Egypt which led to over 100 years of Persian rule.

So although Babylonian rule encompassed most of the former Assyrian provinces, Syria and Palestine it did not include Persia(Elam), Media, Lydia or Egypt. In no way could Nebuchadnezzar be described as 'ruler over all mankind'.

Just to get this clear in my mind, did egypt control palestine until persia got control in the 5th or 6th century bc? Did babylon retain control of palestine for only 50 yrs, or so?

After the battle of Carchemish the Egyptians withdrew from Syria and Palestine and Babylon took control of these areas. Cities in the area including Jerusalem then paid tribute to Babylon.

But after the battle at the Egyptian border in 601BCE, because of Nebuchadnezzar's losses, Jehoiachim stopped tribute payments to Babylon and suffered the consequences a few years later.

Again a decade later the Egyptians made in-roads into Palestine causing Nebuchadnezzar to send another army to the area. Zedekiah had swapped his allegiance to Egypt at the time and again Jerusalem suffered the consequences. Jerusalem was destroyed simply because the city leaders wrongly chose weaker Egypt as an ally.

you make assertions without showing your source. since all it takes, according to you, is "a quick look at any history book," then you apparently won't mind going to the trouble of doing just that and posting a few quotes from such a source along with the name of the publication and the page number. otherwise, you're asking others to just take YOUR word for all that you've said.
