LOL @ Gumby
I have tried that fencing too... it is much easier if you use a post digger, and stay away from the barbed wire!

I tried fencing, I now have a nice privacy fence down one side of my yard so I will never again accidently look at my neighbor's crappy yard.
Never tried the sword kind, but would love to.

I have ALWAYS wanted to take fencing, since I was a little kid and watched Errol Flynn's swordfights! Haven't had the chance to yet, but it's on my To-Do list. Naturally, since it was fighting, my parents forbid it.

Nina,
surprisingly, it is not at all about agression or self defense. I was very surprised to learn that it was all about foot work, right of way and precision moves, very similar to boxing or dancing ( I took those lessons too). You can literaly poke out an eye due to the "thrusting" of the weapon; so you are all suited up with a mask . Once you start, it appears that it is all natural instinct but you are quickly instructed to slow down and follow the routine moves. After a while it "cliques" and is almost like playing a fast game of chess. I always liked the swashbuckler movies and I suppose this is a way of acting out that fantasy.
