What ISP do you use?

Broadband has just been made available in my area and I want to sign up for it(Dial-up is driving me mad....), but I don't know which broadband ISP is the best one to use. I can get a good deal with AOL, but I've been warned against using them. I would have used freeserve, but I've got a dial up connection with them now and its real real bad. I didn't realise just how bad it was until I was using my dad's computer on Blueyonder dial-up today and saw how much faster it was. And his computer is a dinosaur compared to mine. But Blueyonder isn't available in my area because you need cable for it. So what broadband ISP do you use(UK), and would you recommend it?

I swear by BT broadband. You can't go wrong with them. AOL is crap, NTL service is bad and their prices misleading when they tie you in to cable \ phone packages. I don't know about the others.

Thanks Ballistic, I remember seeing one of their cd's outside HMV the other day. I'll pick one up and have a look at the deal. Which ISP's are other people on?

Well, I'm afraid I'd have to disagree with Ballistic. I'm on NTL and have had few problems - though, let's face it, whichever system you use you'll have problems at some stage. My 'phone bill is cheaper than BT and, I believe, so is my broadband. I'd be interested to learn what Ballistic pays and what he gets for the service.

If BT can be proven to be better, I'd use it. I just remember all the problems I had with it when I used its 'phone service. Promises never materialised, the service sucked and the prices were too high - which is why quite a number of us in my area of Manchester changed to NTL in the first place.

One problem I have now is that my work heavily involves using my e-mail address (I'm a writer). I'd hate to have to change and let everyone know again. That's something else you should bear in mind. Whichever broadband service you use you'll probably also use its e-mail server. With this in mind you don't want to be chopping and changing further down the line (gosh, it would play havoc with my address book!).

    Best wishes,

    Ian

    Gadget,

I just used a test of 6 ISP's on the site recommended by Caspian and Pipex wins hands down - apart from when it comes to customer service, where it is not that good!

I think a big mistake a lot of people make is tying in their email address with their ISP.

If email is important (such as for work) then you need it to stay with you and be 'yours', not tied to the internet connection you happen to have in your area and use.

It's worth buynig a domain name and paying a small amount for a proper email service IMO.

I had NTL 150k 'broadband' :) installed a couple of months back and I am pleased with the service. I'd go for the faster 600k or 1mbit if I had the money though. The only downside is that the upstream on NTL's service is half what you get with BT, Blueyonder etc. I only chose NTL because I have the Cable and Phone with them too (plus it's only £17 a month).
