Here is a link that may explain it a little better. It's a conversation between two guys - one an ex-jw (purple), the other, a current jw elder (green).
Sorry, having trouble making it clickable.

I can't really get worked up about this woman and the loss of her view. People in the neighborhood were living in illegal lofts and used their $$$ and political clout to make it legal. Now if the WT wants to take advantage of this that's life.

searcher, these buildings are for Bethelites to live in but the WTS will own them just like other WT Buildings. These aren't private homes for JWs.
Are you sure, Blondie? What's to stop the Tower from using their usual double dealing methods? They could build all these "residential buildings" (that just happen to be full of self-contained apartments) for "religious purposes" and get whatever Govt. concessions and subsidies they can, then turn around and say that, due to the move to upstate New York and the need to downsize operations, these buildings are surplus to requirements, and flog them on the private market for squillions of dollars.

Well, Stephanus, with all the trouble the WTS is having with the French government re taxes, I don't think they want to play new games with the IRS. The WTS has a tenuous relationship with the people in Brooklyn Heights and this might put it over the top.
Anything is possible, Stephanus, but I don't think the WTS is that greedy that they are going to risk the French situation in the US. Better a bird in the hand than 2 in the bush.
I wouldn't want to make accusations like that without hard proof. Be assured that anything they do will be looked at carefully by every lawyer and politician that lives in the Heights area. If the WTS can find a "legal" way to do, I'm sure they will. They certainly have demonstrated they are neither moral nor ethical.

Thanks for the link, growedup! It was really interesting.
I do think that both the elder and the ex-Witness were mistaken about one point, however. It is true that the individuals chosen as officers of the local corporation are generally elders. However, they do not hold the office by virtue of being elders. The office is strictly a legal one. So I don't believe that by removing them as elders, the Society could automatically remove them as directors of the corporation.
If anyone has knowledge otherwise, please let me know, since I'm not 100% sure.

Thanks for the link, so it seems that, at the end of the paper trail, the society DOES own all the kingdom halls, it just doesnt look like it on the surface, very devious.

Well, searcher, it the WTS owns all the KHs, why were they not able to just step in and sell the land one congregation owned in my area when the elder body said they would not do so? I would say because the WTS did not have that type of legal ownership. Does the ownership of the KH revert to the WTS if the elders in the corporation rebel against the WTS, could be, but until that happens ownership in the sense of buying and selling is retained by the congregation through the corporation.
