Where I grew up, we had some skating gatherings, as well as about twice a summer there would be a big beach party. Hundreds of witnesses would go. My hall, being extra strict as it was, never went, though one or two of us would go. Funny, the elders in our hall thought it was bad association over at those other halls, and too many getting together would only bring problems. It was fun though, and maybe extra fun being we were denied so many other fun activities.
Anyone Remember the Skating Parties From the 70's ?

Yeah, we used to do the roller skating thing every Sunday as well. The only reason I remember it stoping was simply because the trend faded out. Roller rinks aren't as hip as they used to be.

Oh, boy, do I remember skating parties!!! In our area it was every Sunday night, and most of the time we just met at a particular rink (I seem to remember Grand Prairie was one of the hot spots). Occasionally a parent would rent out a rink but that was usually on a Saturday afternoon. And that, my friends, was sometimes the ONLY association outside of the KH that we all got.
I was in my 20's and I remember thinking how much I wanted to have a grown-up evening -- no skating parties, no "get-togethers" at someone's house where they played silly games all evening -- just a nice quiet dinner at a good restaurant with civilized conversation, and maybe some dancing afterward. Alas, that seemed to be out of the realm of the little dubbies! I remember that on one of the few dates I had, the gentleman (and I use the term loosely) took me to -- gasp! -- a putt-putt course! Hardly James Bond here.
Big Tex took me away from all that, on so many levels! Thanks, darling!

Yes they were popular here in Minnesota too.
In the 70's, we went to "Skateland" in Brooklyn Park, a Minneapolis suburb. By the early 80's, the "in" place for young dubs to go was "Wooddale" in Woodbury, a St. Paul suburb.
We didn't rent the place, so it was young JW's mingled with other kids. So if you approached someone, you didn't know for sure if they were a JW or not.
That was part of the problem, along with the fact that (shock, horror!!) a WORDLY DJ was playing WORLDLY music, some of which was inappropriate for the tender ears of the young dubs who were there.
So we all heard at the circuit assembly that such organized gatherings were to stop. It sounded like a directive from Brooklyn headquarters, though I can't be sure of that.

Yup, I sure do remember. We would go to a rink that the brothers rented for a Sunday afternoon; the first hour was skating for all, the second hour was a hockey game for the older kids. (I *am* in Canada, after all!!! )
I was just thinking about that a few weeks ago when Hubby and I were driving through the small town where the rink we rented was.

some were engaging in fornication and smoking in the parking lots that the society put a stop to it.
Man..........are you telling me the skating parties could have been even MORE fun?! Darn, I missed it.

In the early 80's, the dubs in my cong used to go skating every Sunday night. What fond memories!!
YES ME TOO!!!! I remember the all night skate from like 10pm to something like 3am. Sooooo many witnesses hooked up this way. I remember Sunday meetings were over, and boom it was a rush to get home, get pretty, and grab extra socks.

Back in them "good old days" my parents would organize a swiming party at one of the hotspings in the mountains and all the good little Jdubbies would migrate in a caravan for a over-night week end swim party. Several marriages came out of the annual event but it all was stopped when a young girl diving through a truck innertube lost here eye on the valve stem.. too bad too. It was good fun.

I have heard that skating parties still take place here on some Sunday nights in public parks. We have large skating rinks or frozen ponds in some of our city parks. They sound like they are family events and less formally organized. I'm sure the kids hang out together and get away with what they can, but I always thought they sounded like a good idea and fun.

Yes I remember those sunday night roller skating parties.
I went to a few of them, not too many.
My dad was a real strict dub back then looked down on any form of recreation as being from the devil.
