Marking.

You know, when I was quite young, maybe 5 or 6, I remember a brother announcing from the platform that so-and-so in another congregation was now considered bad association; since he wasn't baptized, he couldn't be disfellowshipped, but they did single him out by name.

Now if someone is DF or DA, they only announce it in their own congregation, correct?

    E-man,

Here's the thing: most JWs in the hall don't even know who the "marked" individual is! Also, if one was aware who it was and saw them, say, at a supermarket, they would be able to say hello and exchange a few pleasantries. Go out to the pub with the "marked" individual? That would be a no-no.

Not necessarily. If they are known to have a large number of associates in another congregation, or if they used to attend another congregation, then I believe it would be possible for the DF to be announced there as well.

This has happened in regard to us, in the local congregation. The CO was ballistic over it and said INDIVIDUALS can mark someone for their own reasons. That does NOT give them license to get everyone else to mark them too. As I understand it, it is a personal situation, not a congregation action.

I recall several times where the announcement was made in more than one congregation.

This is typically when someone has been in a congregation for a long period of time and then moves to another and is df'd or da'd.

The last one I remember was like .... "Joe Whoever, known to some in the congregation here, has been df'd (da'd)."

I believe you are mistaken, Mulan. It is a congregation action, although it is up to individuals to apply. Basically, it all depends on how perceptive the rank-and-file is. Make no mistake, though -- it is a congregation action.

(Perhaps in your case it was individuals who decided to do their own personal "marking" without an official talk at the Hall.)

Nope.................logansrun. It is an individual thing. I just checked with a former elder. Unless things have changed in the past 5 years, it isn't done by the congregation.

Mulan... it used to be the way you're describing. But it was changed in the w99 7/15 QFR.

    Just a question,

Can ANYONE find the practice of "Marking" in the bible? I know it is mentioned, but I don't recall of anyone in the bible ever being marked, or any mention of how the organization back then should give a sermon on a weak person and have them marked.

    Just wondering.
