Poopie, that is a very interesting take. And you are probably hitting the nail on the hammer head! Fear of being disfellowshipped could be leading to an "unclean" congregation, but then again, when has man ever been clean? I mean, what Elder really qualifies to be an Elder? Are they not unclean themselves?

Something to consider and realize is that elders can be unclean themselves in pseudo secrecy such as adulteraters, pedophiles, wife beaters, child beaters, business crooks, abusers of alcohol, materialistic show offs. etc.
There many JWS that hold up a white sheet of righteousness around themselves and use the JW religion to that availing purpose, those wicked worldly people, you can see I'm not one of them.

Oh my GAWD, Finkelstein, you just described my child-hood with my unclean Elder dad! Not to worry, I reconciled that with, and forgave him, years before he passed.

I have often wondered if DFing actually cures the problem or in fact pushes the wrong doing further under ground. I would say that those who get DFed would only be the tip of the ice burgh. How much of it is going on is anyone's guess????

My gut feeling is that probably 80-90% of the JWs under age 25 have engaged in some "DF-worthy activity" in the past 3 months.
As poopie noted, though, most are smart enough to only do so away from the 10-20% who would rat them out.
