JW Prep Schools?!

I was just reading another thread that mentioned something that knocked me over! This thread mentions the existence of JW prep schools! Can anyone enlighten me on this topic? Are they pre-schools, high schools, colleges? Are they located all over the world, or is this the only one that exists? What do these schools teach? Are they funded by the JW's, or by the families of the students? I had no idea these things existed! I swear, I learn something new every single day on this board!!

Maybe Hawaiian could post more info, but off-hand, this is what I would say...

I've heard of private schools run by JWs for JWs. They are rare, but they do exist. However, they are not sanctioned by the WTS.

P.S. I see that Hawaiian was actually quoting Kimberlee Norris, so she may have more info.

Wow! Did a search and look what I found! Maybe others are aware of this, but I'm not! The name of this JW school is "New System School, Inc." Here is the page which cites their history from the url:

New System School, Inc., was created for the purpose of helping those who have found the public school system, or environment, detrimental to their children's education. The school was started by Phil and Linda Rial in North Carolina in 1980. In 1985 the school was incorporated in Missouri, and associated corporations have since been formed in many states. We have students and faculty in 35 states, several foreign countries...and we're still growing!

New System School, Inc., is an organization of parents who wish to be very closely involved in their children's educational process. They have made legal arrangements to be recognized as a private religious school. This is not a home school satellite situation, but a private religious school with a faculty and non-institutional campus arrangement.

Hmmmm....verrrrry interesting. Do ya suppose they are sponsored by The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania, or maybe The Christian Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses?

they say they are not, I would doubt that the watchtower would ever sponsor one.

It is just a homeschooling program, but tailored for the JW mind...there are hundreds of these organizations out there in general....American School, Oak Woods or Hill...a ton...(not for JWs...but just general homeschooling).

you know JWs LOVE to home school. At lot of people are nowadays of course..I have known families both nonJW and JW that did a horrible job with it, and others, again both non and JW where it was the appropriate thing academically for their kids. There are some sh*ty schools in some parts of the country.

One of these such schools takes horrid advantage of my mother. She is a legally credentialed teacher and is "on staff" of one of these "we are not a home school" corporations. She spends hours on end grading work of kids, getting paid hardly anything so that the school can say a "credentialed" teacher is the one doing the work. The work arrives daily by mail from all over the country, and the kids have learned it on their own "at home." However, what she does can be done by any conscientious sophomore in high school, using the teacher's edition of the book. All she does is score it. She is called a teacher, but she is really just a "reader." As a professional educator myself, I am offended by the value she has put on her fabulous education and experience. I was acquainted for a while with Michael Newton of NSS... I can confirm that they are essentially a home-school system. And I strongly doubt that they are sponsored by the Society. While some local congregations are fanatic about home-schooling, it's not anything the Society has tended to encourage.

If anything, the WTS, has subtly discouraged home schooling. Anecdotal information suggests that many parents are not involved with their children's schooling at home. Children are doing housework and pioneering rather than learning the basics such as reading, writing, etc. So many do not get a degree that counts in gaining employment and had have to go to community colleges to gain a certificate. Too many prove to be a drain economically on their families.

Even ardent supporters of home education admit that home schooling is sometimes done in an ineffective or even irresponsible manner. Indeed, every year there are some home-school efforts that fail, leaving children ill-prepared to face future academic challenges.

Further, parents should not deceive themselves into thinking that home schooling alone will protect their children from the immoral influences found in the public schools. There is no way for anyone to be completely shielded from contact with the world. Many factors beyond formal schooling shape a child?s thinking, including parental example, associations, entertainment, and both personal and family Bible study. Without diligent training in all these areas, no educational system will prove successful in raising Christian children.

True, some parents have felt that home schooling has contributed to the spiritual progress of their children. But it should not be forgotten that many Christian youths who are attending public schools are making fine spiritual progress as well. In many cases, parents have had good results in working closely with their local school district to ensure that their children get a quality education.
