Is the scripture found at Jeremiah 10:3 talking about a Chrismtas Tree?

Jeremiah 10:3-5 - "for the customs of the peoples are false. A tree from the forest is cut down, and worked with an axe by the hands of a craftsman. 4 Men deck it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so that it cannot move. 5 Their idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field, and they cannot speak; they have to be carried, for they cannot walk. Be not afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good."

the reason i asked was b/c some religions , other than jws use it to show christmas is pagan. I was listening to wbap, mark davis, and someone called in with it. Did it have to do with the Romans and their celebration of the satranula? (sp)

No they are just talking about a tree being fashioned into a wooden idol. It's worked with the axe of a craftsmen, not merely cut down. That implies that it was carved into something. Idols were often plated with precious metals and adorned with gems, you have to remeber at this point while it's made out of wood it's no longer a tree.

No, Wednesday....and it's symbolic in more than one way.

Jeremiah 10:3-5 - "for the customs of the peoples are false. A tree from the forest is cut down, and worked with an axe by the hands of a craftsman.

A tree is also sent to the paper mill and made into pulp to be processed, yet again, into paper, which is then used in books.....(as in "tree of knowledge")

4 Men deck it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so that it cannot move.

"Apples of gold in carvings of silver...are words spoken at the proper time".....and they "hammer" on about a subject and "nail" the subject down, in order that it seems "concrete" or irrefutable...the "truth"....in "black and white"....as so many printed "facts" and "laws" appear to be....

5 Their idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field, and they cannot speak; they have to be carried, for they cannot walk.

Words on paper are idolized in this day and age, as they were already becoming by Jeremiah's day.....Words are sought for judging others, for support of one's claims, whether treacherous or not, for healing, to increase one's wealth, to provide sustenance, to influence and/or to glorify one's own self as well as to influence others.....Their alleged "factuality" is to "scare off the crows" or opposers to the authors' agenda in writing them....they have become ordinance to control others' reality and keep it in line with the wishes of the authors.....but words must be carried.....by word of mouth and in books and on documents, for their ordinances or ability to succeed in controlling peoples' thoughts, words and actions would be ineffective without supporters of written words....after all....in the beginning (Genesis) the word (of God) was (portrayed as) God, which is why Genesis does not address God's existence pre-creation.....it was a usurping of God's position.....

Be not afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good."

Jeremiah was deceived if he believed this....for words put into law DO evil....AND do good....every day.....but then, perhaps Jeremiah believed in the real God's ability to overcome the inadequacies of written and spoken words.....

    Wednesday,

You are right about the misuse of that scripture. A JW elder showed me that scripture and told me that is why we don't have christmas trees.

Well I like Christmas trees anyway.

Especially the kiddies dancing around singing Oh Kwismas twee, oh Kwismass twee...!

thank u Frannie, that was excellent. The discussion on the radio got me to thinking that before i embark on celebrating this holiday, i might want to research it a bit. I have always known that several other religions do not support xmas celebration. And a few leave it to u to decide what to do. Years ago, around xmas i believe it was the church of christ, of maybe church of God that passed out flyers saying generally what jws do. to be honest, i never paid much attention to what jws said about xmas, they found something wrong with all the holidays so why not this one? But i would like to be better informed. guess i was not a good jws, I just read their literature and took it as gospel.(meaning i seldom did research)
