Whether the letter was a "cover-up" letter or legit and despite the fact that it basically says report the abuse if required by law, this letter shows no concern or compassion for abuse victims. There was no indication of doing what's best for the victims. All it's trying to do is protect the organization from legal problems.
There's another thread about elders still "in" and trying to do good. After looking at letters like these, my advise to these guys is, "get out". If not for any other reason but to protect yourself from lawsuits and legal nightmares if you remain an elder and ever have to deal with one of these situations. The WTS is setting itself up as obeying laws and being a responsible group in such matters. They will have the letters and policies in place to cover themselves. When more of these cases hits the courts, elders will be left hanging with no support or help from New York and will face the full penalty by themselves.
