The Mormons have a great PR machine. Women? Really? That has to be a ploy to look more 'normal' because of the Warren Jeff's scandal. "Oh, we are not like those CRAZY fringe Mormons. We treats our wimmins good!"
Blech.
While they may seem less cultish than the JWs, at least by these topics, they still use the same mind control techniques as any cult, controlling your time, controlling your friends, claiming to be the sole source of salvation, etc.. A cult is a cult.
What may be happening is that the Mormon hierarchy attempting to move the religion more towards the mainstream while the Jehovah's Witnesses are moving the other way; more control, more paranoia, more stupidity.

Why do you think they have Caleb and Sophia now? They are saying it's ok to have kids. I complain all the time about how it used to be frowned upon to have children and now they make cartoons for them. The flip-flops are nuts always, but this one is to boost membership.
All religions are Cults , some are just more Cultish than others .
The Bible refers to Christianity , the way , as a new sect , a Cult ,Acts 24:14 .

Striking contrast.
Surprising and refreshing to see the Mormons allowing women to give podium talks at this event.
I listened to a few of the Mormon talks and the sincerity and quality of speaking absolutely eclipses the dry, script reading style of JW convention speakers.
