Once, when talk of that type started, a (wise) elder shut it down by saying "Funny how people never think the money in their wallet is demonized and they don't know where that has been ..."

When I was waking up my bookbag shouted out to me: STOP GOING OUT IN FIELD SERVICE!
So i threw my bookbag away and quit going to meetings.

Oh boy! Demon stories...these are always great fun. In the late 70's after I left Bethel, I had a Witness girlfriend. Unknown to me, she suffered from anxiety attacks and depression. I bought a solid gold antique watch for her and had it completely refurbished at considerable expense. She gave it back to me because her elder father had determined that her anxiety attacks were actually demon attacks from the watch. By the way, her anxiety attacks did not resolve. Perhaps the demon attacks were caused the used car her father bought for her!

I always felt that some jws that went on and on how the demons were attacking them, that why they thought their god could not protect them from that? That usually stopped them ranting around me. So many of them were on the fringes of the jw group, felt left out and needed attention, they thought this would get them attention, :( I will tell an experience of how one circuit overseer, tried to deal with one sister's belief that she demanded that others believe, that buying anything at a garage sale was a bad thing, it might be demonized and she counseled others that it was wrong for "them" to do it. He asked once at the meeting, based on that, could you buy a used car, maybe the previous owner was demonized, or even a new car, because a demonized person might have helped it be assembled? Well, that shut that down in that congregation on that point.

This all coincided with the period in the late 70's - 80's known as the 'Satanic Panic'. A lot of fundamental christian groups all had similar stories related to imminent possession.
In popular culture , a perfect storm of events like Dungeons and Dragons (created by an ex-JW), heavy metal and The Exorcist -secret cults and conspiracy theories were abundant and even the U.S. congress got involved.

jhine: "I would have to ask if any of these stories told by the WT actually true ? They all start with ' A Christian man ' or ' A Christian woman ' , so very anonymous"
They're the WT version of parables. Instead of Jesus's "A certain man...", it's "A Christian man/woman...".
