17. What are some factors that may affect whether a brother wears a beard?

17 What about the propriety of brothers wearing a beard? The Mosaic Law required men to wear a beard. However, Christians are not under the Mosaic Law, nor are they obliged to observe it. (Lev. 19:27; 21:5; Gal. 3:24, 25) In some cultures, a neatly trimmed beard may be acceptable and respectable, and it may not detract at all from the Kingdom message. In fact, some appointed brothers have beards. Even so, some brothers might decide not to wear a beard. (1 Cor. 8:9, 13; 10:32) In other cultures or localities, beards are not the custom and are not considered acceptable for Christian ministers. In fact, having one may hinder a brother from bringing glory to God by his dress and grooming and his being irreprehensible.—Rom. 15:1-3; 1 Tim. 3:2, 7.

The main reason I understood that it was not recommended is that it does not represent the look of a minister of God. They said that if our appearance were a stumbling block to others it was unacceptable. In the 60's in the U.S. a beard was a symbol of rebellion. As ministers we would not want to portray rebelliousness like Satan.

A brother I knew in the 1990's who came from Germany originally had a van dyke beard. They were on him about it and he said, "its OK in Germany and there are no hippies anymore so I'm keeping it". He did, but they wouldn't let him serve in any capacity. He said he didn't really care about the beard but he loved making the brothers crazy so he kept it. My kind of guy. He was a born in too by the way. He had a stubborn German streak in him.

Papua New Guinea is a country in which beards are the rule rather than the exception. This includes its business, professional and political elite. Many of the country's prime ministers - and nearly all its governor generals - have worn beards.

Yet, the JWs in that country still enforce a no-beards rule. Talk about Corporate Image!

Here is my "nutshell" commentary:

A. Jews had beards

B. If Jesus existed, he would have had a beard, because he was the ULTIMATE Jew ("CODENAME: Ultra Jew-1" will be my next movie; watch for it, it is part of my "The Bible for Morons" Animated Series).

C. "Pasta" Charles Taze Russell had a beard.

D. Russellites (mostly just the guys, only a few of the wimmen) had beards of varying degrees of handsomeness in imitation of their Fearless Leader, whose own beard was of "meh" quality.

F. Therefore, no true Christian would dare wear a beard, unless they are gay, in which case the phrase "wear a beard" has a totally different meaning.

Its a power domination thing we must all be OSFA one size fits all. I grew a beard and my uber wife made a sideways comment and this was after i had not attended the kh for years.

My reason? I got fed up with shaving.The jw see beards as a form of rebellion..

Many years ago while still in I had a beard for the same reason and I was in a profession and was fed up with a 'bloody' neck and blood stains occuring on my collar..well,, their was an entire episode of the 'Service Meeting' devoted to .. beards. I was the only bearded one in the kh.

There was no mention of skimpy string strap dresses as worn by the speaking elders daughter etal in the same talk but in a rare display of support my wife spoke up about what some sisters were wearing and you should have seen the particular one slink down in her seat.

As the WT would have you believe, "We don't hold to the traditions of men, look at us, we change doctrine, etc". But they are hypocrites, they created their own stuff and hold on to them. Look down on beards because it was their 'tradition'.

I think you could argue men without beards are trying to look more effeminate. You could compare it to shaving your legs or armpits. Their are stories of young men shaving to hide their age and fulfill fantasies of older men. This is far more realistic than the "tight pants" idea. Someone could easily use the typical watchtower rhetoric to show how not having a beard would be unchristian. The Greeks and the Egyptians all shaved and you could throw in something about many Greek men were homosexuals. It practically writes itself.
