A lawyer here at work has started one, he e-mails a list of books people have suggested and we vote on it, then the last Saturday of January we'll be heading over to his place, have some wine and discuss the books.

The books suggested this time around were:

Immortality, by Milan Kundera; To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee; The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald (my suggestion); The Reader, by Bernhard Schlink; Le Petit Prince, by Antoine de Saint Exupéry, and The Blood of Others by Simone de Beauvoir.

The winner was To Kill a Mockingbird; there is so much to discuss about this book, I've forgotten so many details from when I first read it. So ... if you want to do To Kill a Mockingbird!!!

I wouldn't mind joining the book club if it's like one of the above books, or a classic, or a really good biography. I'll keep checking in to see what has been decided.

    Thanks for the Responses everyone.

Anyone interested PM me here or at [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> with 2 recommendations. We'll see how many are interested right after Christmas and then vote on a book.

P.S. I really want to stick with non-fiction.

I was in two book clubs for a while.. that was hectic for me.. but I loved it.

We too did "to kill a mockingbird".. then we all met and watched the movie together with lots of popcorn and junkfood... It was great.

the two book groups were quite different from each other.

One had a writer, a former publisher, a librarian, a photographer, a retired U. N. representative, lawyer, Meditation leader, interpretive dancer.. .

There meetings were sort of: What did you think of the Character development of such and such a character. The style? Plot?.. schematical layout?.. . conclusion?.....Each person took their turn speaking and no one butted in when someone else was talking.

The other book group was a bunch of housewives who had young kids:

That started with a big bottle of wine, desserts. Questions like: What did you think was the best sex scene? Who slept with who? Lots of talk about kids, and problems, some friendly peer therapy on each other . Everybody talked at the same time, lots of laughing and alot of how the book related to us on a personal level.

Soooooooooooooooo... what kind of book reading group would you like to have?

p.s: I really like the intellectual stimulation of my first book club...BUT THEY WERE SOOO BORING at times.

When I decided two book clubs was too much .. I took the mom's with young kids group. God .. it was so fun. Our books were so much more exciting. Even did a play. and each read a characters lines for a whole section... FUNNY or what?

Actually there are two other people interested as well, czar and Jennifer. Sorry I didn't mean to forget you two.

Hopefully we'll have a list of suggestions we could vote on over the weekend.

    Sandy,

I enjoy savoring what I read and, therefore, I read slowly, identifying myself with the characters and the surroundings. On top of that, with this double-life ordeal, my time is quite limited these days.

Having said that, will this be a 1-book-per-month book club? If so, count me out for the time being.

Sandy: I'm reading To Kill a Mockingbird right now for the book club someone started here at work. I've read Angela's Ashes and would like to do re-read it for your book, hopefully it will be in February (our date for Mockingbird is January 31st).

Count me in if it's Angela's Ashes and if it's around mid-February or later.
