Derrick, I'd be uncomfortable being there too. I do hope things have been thwarted. And I do believe these things are for real! Of course, you've got to live your life without always being sick about terrorism but I do take these things seriously......Sooner or later....

Actually, hitting the Hoover Dam with a passenger airliner would be next to impossible, and destroying it would be far less likely. It's basically thousands of tons of conrete and steel reinforcing beams. The valley (have you ever driven over the dam, you'll know what I mean) is so narrow and winding that the plane would probably just crash into the walls.

Plus, even if it DID manage to navigate the winding canyon, it would have to hit the dam, and this is a plane, not a bomb packed with explosives - so they won't have much firepower to destroy that much concrete - and the water would keep the steel from melting, which is what led to the WTC collapse.

Remember the difficulties of the dambusters in WW2? Same thing, same reasons - it took a specialized military plane, a special explosive, and complete domination of European airspace to get consistent results. None of which Al-Qaida can muster.

So, while the Dam is a viable target in terms of terrorism, the difficulties of this method should be obvious to even the most shoe-ridden organization. A far better idea would be to dive under the lake and scuba plant some mines or something, but even that would be next to impossible, given the situation.

While the results would be astronomical, because of its value, the dangers inherent are just too high for a terrorist organization on the run to handle. Had they the resources of a nation at their disposal, and the element of surprise, like they did in Sept 2001, it might be a more credible risk - but even then the odds are still stackes against a significant attack on the Hoover Dam.

The Hoover Dam is very near Las Vegas -- if I were a terrorist that would be an even "juicier" target -- it would devastate the economy, cause wide spread flooding and damage and drain electrical power from the electric grid to Phoenix, Las Vegas and South Eastern California

I love his radio show on Sunday nights. I've been listening to him for years. He his very insightful and he's not like a Rush Limbaugh or O'Rielly. He's very independent with right leanings. But not aon all issues. Plus his show is funny and entertaining, especially the sound effects. I go to his homepage once in a while.

    Czar,

The way you described the plane flying into the canyon and hitting the target reminded me of the trench scenes in the old Star Wars video game.

    Yaaahoooooo!

Time to fire up good ol' Xmame.

(have you ever driven over the dam, you'll know what I mean) czarofmischief -- yes I have and I am sorry for being stupid - you are correct it would be extremely difficult --it takes Highway 90? into Arizona from Las Vegas and Lake Meade area. When I went over it last, 9/11 had occurred about 70 days previously and there were still highway patrolman and national guard and the route was still limited to a single lane of traffic over the dam - so they were concerned -- but in hindsight this was probably a concern more for truck bombs and stuff like that. My car was stopped and searched -and they wanted to see in the trunk
