Lets put Saddam on trial...

What is missing in world politics is accountability of countries for their actions.

Everyone knows that every major country did business with Saddam... now they are afraid they will be exposed. No dictator can stay "in business" if no one does business with him.

I say air all the dirty laundry! Maybe countries will be less likely to do business with dictators in the future.

I'd like to see his trial made public as well, although I SERIOUSLY doubt it will ever happen.

Why? As others have stated, Saddam is quite capable of airing dirty laundry. Lest we forget Hussein was a United States ALLY who was supplied by the US government in the 1980's during the Iran-Iraq war.

Much like Osama bin Laden and the Afghani mujahdeen were supported and supplied by the United States during the war against the Russians.

Oh what a tangled web we weave...

Alot of problems arise when talking about trying a person like Saddam. Where will he be tried? Under what authority will he tried? What laws will prevail?

Saddam cannnot get a fair trial anywhere. The previous views expressed in this thread pretty much show that everyone knows he is guilty and therfore should pay with his life. A trial is supposed to presume that a man is innocent and the prosecution is supposed to prove to either a judge, panel of judges or a jury of his peers; that the defendant is indeed guilty. Where do we find an unbiased judge or jury to condemn this man. Also, who would actually comprise a jury of Saddam's peers?

I think any trial of Saddam Hussein would be farce. It would be a choreographed affair, with the judgement a forgone conclusion. It would be better to just leave the man with a 38 special and one bullet.

Saddam wasn't really a "friend" more than a lesser enemy of the US, much like Bin Laden and much like the Pakistani general. In fact, the whole idea of US involvement in the Iran-Iraq war wasn't to help Saddam win, but rather induce a stalemate where both countries beat the living shit out of eachother. And Bin Laden was no friend of the US at that time either. The US was fighting an idealogical war with not one, but 2 blocs at that time. The Islamic bloc and the Communist bloc, and the Communist bloc at the time was more of a threat than the Islamic bloc. So of course the US would choose a lesser enemy in a situation like that. Wouldn't anybody?

And I don't think WE should put Saddam on trial. He should be tried by the Iraqi people, just like Nicolai C. and Benito M. were punished by their people.

He's not a US citizen nor resident nor even somebody that commited a crime in the US.

If Saddam was smart, he would demand a US trial. His best bet would be what happened to President General Manuel Ortega from Panama, Room & Board at Club Fed, which would be great compared to what he will "receive" (heh heh) from his own people.......

The US Iraq-Iran war involvement is a red herring. On the world stage, today?s friend is tomorrow?s enemy. So what? Situations change, remember, the US was smarting over the Iran hostage situation, and wanted to hurt Iran anyway it could....even dealing with the Devil.
