My mom would drive me crazy about the new clothes. Day long shopping trips, taking forever at the stores, etc. One year I finally asked her "you know, how is shopping for new clothes for the memorial any different from shopping for new Easter clothes? Arent we doing the exact same thing that we criticize other Christians for?" After I said that we never went shopping for memorial clothes again.
For just a moment there I thought this thread was about the President.

Because contrary to "some" beliefs, they are human.
What use to bug me are the ones that wore the same thing ALL THE TIME. I wanted to rearrange the look of their outfits so they would at least look different sometimes. Add a different colored scarf or put the blouse on backwards or something. Anything!
The only brothers I knew who got new suits were children who had outgrown older ones. New suits mostly came when the old ones wore out. Dresses become outdated much more often than suits do. Growing girls need summer dresses and winter dresses. The assembly is a good time to think about buying summer dresses. We all have different joys in our lives and for many people having something new to wear is a nice treat.
As has been mentioned, there is little joy in the lives of JWs. JWs aren't the only people who enjoy a good occasion to dress up. "Worldly" people just choose different occasions to purchase and wear groovy threads. I always dressed my kids up for the Memorial because it was the special occasion. It also took the sting out of the fact that I could not dress them up for Easter Sunday like my own mother dressed my siblings and me when were children.

My mom had an outifit like that.
I used to look forward to getting new suits for every assembly and memorial, looking back though I can think of so many things I would have better spent that money on, and beleive me I could have got alot cause my parents didnt skimp on the KH clothing.

I second Blondie: People like to look good for social events.
My first husband was very cheap, so the only excuse I had to buy a new dress was for the assemblies, district conventions, and Memorials...besides...I was a very styling JW....lol
