    Welcome,

People in their 70's and 80's do night janitorial work all the time. No big deal huh? Serves em right. In my experience, reality has no affect on Witnesses. Many seem to enjoy poverty. It is a requirement to enter the promised land isn't it? The Witnesses are like the Israelites with Moses in the Bible story, except Witnesses have made their own wilderness and there is no promised land and names are not used to protect the guilty.

    Onintwo,

I never paid attention to that crap. Got my little college degree and always participated in 401K savings. By the time I retire, I'll be pretty well set. Poor the ones that relied on the Organization for guidance in this respect.

Oh well, here in the US they'll be taken care of with low housing for the needie, Medicare/Medicaid, and there are other benefit orgs for the poor.

I know this elder that in the early 80s always said that there was no need to buy a house or participate in savings plans because the New System was right around the corner. Well, now that he's retired, he has very limited income and has to have handouts from the Government and his children. Poor guy! There are many more like him, and they still continue to buy into it.

I also feel bad for the ones in 3rd world countries! Those types are the ones that buy more into the 'live forever' propaganda, while the elite is here in the US living the high life.

Management will have much to answer for come judgement day.

    DY

Of course the world has continued for decades since that "out of business" nonsense was spewed from the platforms

Reminds me of a carpet and flooring store in the city where I grew up. They were constantly advertising a grand "Going out of Business" sale. It was a constant fixture and curiosity in the time I grew up there.

I moved away and sometimes I wonder if they are still going out of business.

Hey drawcad, I'd forgotten about that bit about the "college degree equivalency" thing. What rubbish! Try entering any field for which some degree of certification is required with your Watchtower and Awake credentials.

People working into their 70' and 80's is depressing. Man, I hope that in about seven years or so my wife and I can travel to nice places and play golf! We do some of that now, but I'm hoping to do more of it on a much grander scale.

Well, I'm at work and gotta keep the squirrel cage turning.

Good thread onintwo. BTW Are you a golfer?

I don't know why, but my dad, from my earliest memories, even though he was a very staunch JW, always invested heavily into company and private RSPs. He even dabbled in the stock market and real estate and did very well with that as well.

And from the time of my first full time job at 18, he encouraged me to do the same, and I have. It always bothered me though when the subject came up with other older JWs. I would get some rude comments, about not relying on Big J, and all of that money would be useless in the "New System" and could be better used to "help" the organization.

It saddens me to think about all of those who put their trust in the WTBTS, and are in their "golden years" and HAVE to continue to work, just to support themselves.

And it maddens me, that these same ones who have or will become destitute, are putting a burden on our social systems, because they gave their effort and time to an organization, that will give them nothing in return.

On a side note, does anyone remember jws taking out loans towards the end of the year, hoping Armageddon, would come and they wouldn't have to pay it off. Only it never came, but they would do the same thing the following year, and the next......

Elsewhere: Thanks for that quote. I remember reading that, and thinking I would never be able to get a job and buy a car.

Awak 5/22/69,pg15, If you are a young person, you also need to face the fact that you will never grow old in this present system of things. .....all evidence in fulfillment of Bible prophecy indicates that this corrupt system is due to end in a few years. ....as a young person you will never fulfill any career that this system offers. If you are in high school and thinking about a college education, it means at least four, perhaps even six or eight more years to graduate into a specialized career. But where will this system of things be by that time? It will be well on the way toward its finish, if not actually gone!

How may lives have they ruined?

the "college degree equivalency" was a way to make people feel good about themselves as they were getting shafted. "Yes, I do not have a good job, any savings or an education, but the watchtower says that I do."

  • Analysis
    Analysis

This issue has become a big topic in the press in the US. Based on Economic Forecasts most all of the Baby Boomers in the US are not financially prepared to retire. So many people when they change jobs cash out their 401Ks and spend the money. The average credit card debt in the US is over $8,000 US Dollars. I read a few weeks ago that the average 55-year-old head of household has a Net Worth of around $150,000 and that includes the value of the homes.

It is not going to be a pretty picture in 2012 in the US when the first wave of Baby Boomers hope to retire at the full Social Security age of 66. Those retiring early can start collecting at 62.

So it is not just a JW issue.

Analysis, I agree with you. It's not exclusively a JW problem. But I think you'll have to agree that this problem may be especially acute within the Borg. That's the one group that I can think of that definetly de-emphasized investing in this old system of things. At least persons in the general population know that they need to be saving towards their retirement. The SS thing won't be much. Never meant to be much more than a safety net, as I understand it.

I send my widowed mom money each month, have for years. My four brothers also do. (although three of them are sporadic...they always have some sort of reason why they can't) She gets a small pension from my dad's old union, SS and nothing else. (besides what we boys do). But then, that gets into something else. A previous poster in this thread talked about young married couples putting off having children to the New System. How many of them might wish they had some help in their older years? It's sad. The Society is truly guilty of steering persons in the wrong direction. That's why I hope that this issue can be spotlighted enough to put some pressure on them. They are ruining lives every minute!

Yes, I like to hit a few. (golf balls). My wife and I usually take the sticks when we travel or do a little road trip.
