Regarding why cats eat string, its not so much that they like to eat it, but they are fascinated by playing with it. Of course they have to taste it when they play. So, since their tongues are like the fastener end of velcro, they can't get it out once they get it started and it has to keep feeding in. Since they don't have opposable digits like we all do, there isn't any way they can pull it out of their own mouths. So even though its cute to see them play with it, its best to not keep it around or put it away.
