You can embed image references in a post, but not by copy-pasting HTML into the post, since it will be escaped so that the greater-than and less-than signs show up correctly. Instead, use the "link image" button above and to the left of the bold button. That should work for ya.

You can actually paste/compose raw HTML in your post, but you have to switch the post editor from "Design" to "HTML" view first.
