I have used Aol since 96 and am ok with it. My son the software and computer tech, hates it. He says, to quote"it's a freaking virus". I have heard that if u try and remove it it just won't go away easily. Gawd knows what would happen if i uninstalled it. It is also high, and i do receive a lot of spam. I have had to totally block all but selected users form my IM's or i get the nasty stuff. (porn). I only keep it for the e-mail program. it is simple and i like it. Outlook express sucks. but finances may force me to change soon so, i guess i can report to u guys what it is like to remove AOL after it has been on your computer since 96.Also, it does not play nice with other programs, or at least older versions didn't. Aol will tell u, that there program is advanced and the other programs are at fault.

Well AOL acts like a virus in that you cannot remove it completly, unless you format your hard drive. Its clingly like an old whore in a Bar.

That is me in the Bar waiting for my popers and pitcher of Rolling Rock.

I used be on AO-HELL for quite some time. Like some of you mentioned, the dial up connection sucks, even on cable modem, I would get bumped offline! Let alone not being able to open many many web pages. I switched over to MSN a little over a year ago and can't complain.

AOL is perfect for someone who has little computer savy and yet wants to get on the net without a lot of training. Basically you put in the AOL cd and it does everything for you..

I have had friends who had only dial up that used to get kicked off a lot...........One reason they didn't like it. I can't say when I had it that it was a problem for me. What I didn't like was that it automatically makes protocol changes to your computer and just uninstalling it, does not necessarily change that. I also did not like the AOL browser. I still opened up IE to surf.

Yup... very true. I know some people who use their computer for nothing more than AOL Email and playing the shared games... like bridge.

It's all they need and they are perfectly content with it.

    Blimey.

Aol is about as welcome as the proverbial turd in a swimming pool I see.

    OK...now:

Obviously, it's a dumb name to give to the UK sector. America On Line is hardly an accurate description for this passionate patriot in WSM
Does this mean us Yanks should reject any product with the following names attached, British, United Kingdom, British Isles, England etc. ??
All I'm saying is that when us Brits are online, it's hardly America on Line, is it? In the Brit sector leastways, I did make that reasonably clear methinks. Englishman.

    Valis,

Your photo denigration is not that bad. Iv seen college students fresh out who can't do as well as you can and they only take half the amount of drugs you do. Someday you'll pick up a bootleg copy of Photoshop and nobody will be safe.

As Singing man mentioned, AOL seems to put things somewhere that screw up new IP programs you try to use.

I've had AOL's stepchild -- CompuServe for a long time, they have almost no SPAM protection. I would get 70 - 80 SPAMS everyday, I finally gave up & changed to EarthLink two months ago. I like it better, but, I'm having a lot of problems with pages not fully loading or not found on IE(6), I have XP-Pro. Another thing is images...I keep getting the little red X in the white boxes ALL over the pages. I have to RT clk and 'Show Picture' on everyone. I've spent hours with EarthLink techs who helped a lot and were very nice, they groaned when they found out about AOL/CS and said AOL 'changes' things on your computer which causes a lot of problems.

Is anyone familar with this...? Can any of you puter geeks tell me what to do or what to ask the techs...?

    Thanks, Lee

AOL reminds me of the Watchtower Organization in that once your in, it's impossible to get out. I had to sign up once because I was moving and in between connections, big mistake. It took me five months to finally terminate my account. Plus, there's no real clear number to call, instead you have to search and search for this real small number on the back of the CD carton and then call and face a gauntlet of questions before you can finally terminate your account. Plus, termination must be immediate even though your paid up to the end of the month or otherwise you have to call back at the end of the month and go through the whole process of why you don't want their service anymore? Well, duh, pop ups everywhere and they are way too expensive. For not much more, you can get a DSL connection. AOL sucks but atleast you can quit if persistant unlike other organizations I know.

ROFLMAO at seven! Ha ha!! That's so true.

AOL is totally awful. I installed it on my computer when I was waiting for cable service one time, and, after 20 minutes loading they're propaganda, I immediately uninstalled every piece of crap that I could find. They had AOL shortcuts all over the dammed place, and money garbage, and crap.

I don't let corporations take over my computer. I also don't have internet browsing the speed of molases in January.
