I'm currently reading a book called Shaman Healer Sage which is very useful, but a little bit too focused on possible negative impact of things. It states catagorically that you can't use the healing methods described until fully trained. How do you view this? Can you be a Shaman without having to spend years and years learning?

Sirona, good question! I, too, have that book...............hmmm, from what I've gathered, i.e. from what people have said to me, many feel that it takes lots of study to be able to fully look at the world Shamanically..........my ex-teacher was one of those. She had studied under a few Peruvian shamans herself, and told me that many of her students had been with her for years..........however, I feel that some of the abilities that Shamans have can come naturally, as gifts, at birth to some people..........Lynn Andrews spoke of always having been able to see auras from childhood on.........OBE's come easier for some people than others......I've never had one that I know of..........I did try to travel, in one of my personal sessions by drum to another world, but, there was a block there.................I couldn't do it. I think, Shamanism is as much a state of "mind" or "perception" as it is of having certain abilities................too rigid of an attachment to perception of the world thru intellectualism can be a detriment............I think this is what my Teacher was trying to tell me when I was still doing sessions with her.............she was also a Gestalt Therapist, and combined many of these practices with her Shamanistic skills............it was pretty cool, but, I had "personality" problems with her................I just couldn't swallow some of the stuff she said, nor the way she said it........but, I respect that others might find her very instructive..............I never sat in on one of her regular classes, so I can't tell you how or what was taught. The experiences I spoke of were from special seminars she held from time to time.................looking back, I've gotten alot of insight into the process tho, and continue to hold myself open for more teaching experiences.............my other guides, so far, are Owl, Hawk, Badger and Crow. My last name is Crowe (maiden)..........so, those black friends have always been a part of my growing up years! Owl came to me shortly after I became single..........and the others have just popped in when they knew I was ready for their wisdom and insight. I consider it a lifelong learning experience myself, that's why I wanted to start this discussion, I love hearing other's experiences.

With respect, you don't know what you are talking about.

    ... and you do?

How are you so sure that the spirits you communicate with are what they appear to be? Or the items you focus your will upon are not simply the dungy idols as described by the Bible?

You have no idea of my background or the people I associate with, so please do not assume that I simply speak from the seat of ignorance or as a blinkered Bible basher.

I'm sure the Wiccan faith helps to empower the individual and place great meaning upon the objective world of reality. It does away with the very concept of sin and with the need for Christ as a mediator between ourselves and God. So in that sense, we do bat from a different ball park as far as our ideas are concerned.

I know you recognize "the divine". Let me ask you a question, based upon your own understanding of "the divine", what is the hope for the future? Plus, do you believe in the cycle of rebirth? ... and finally, where are the origins of your belief system?

Wouldn't recommend it myself, as it means actively opening yourself up to "spirit guides".

Blanko, that is YOUR opinion and experience............it doesn't mean EVERYONE has the same experience or will. That's what I objected to in your post, that you made a bit of a blanket statement of condemnation..............as I stated in my comments so far, it is necessary to exercise caution........obviously there are some real tricksters that can create serious problems. You have to be on your guard and trust your personal guides to protect you.

I was a dabbler shall we say in the world of the occult for a while about 15 years ago. Entered into a coven for a while and now associate with a group who research occult matters, including certain areas I would prefer they would stay away from. They investigate to uncover the roots behind certain practises and that's all.

Personally I stay clear now due to awful choatic energies that were unleashed into my life. I became quite ill and can link my illness to that exposure.IMO there is "no difference" between spirit manifestation that now operate through "different" channels towards the earth, they are simply trying to ground themselves and use our dense matter, whilst taking vital energy. Without a doubt there is deception there. They pretend to operate through clean channels, but in reality push the mind towards a belief system that oposes the true God (the greatest spirit).

Most of the pagan customs are steeped in material idolatry for a start. Think about it, your mother gives you a teddy bear as a present, you focus all of your will upon the teddy bear and totally ignore the mother. How does this make your mother feel?

Clear moral codes are pushed to one side and idividuality is brought to the fore. The magician transcends reality using either emptying rituals, to disconnect the emotional centre away from logic through thought, achieving a state whereby morality plays no greater part than the effect of a fart in the wind. The weaker initiates achieve this by using a potent mixture of drugs or alcohol. The creator I define in my mind would not use these methods for enlightenment.

They also focus their attention towards the planets and worship even the "moon goddess" or forms there within. These customs snake straight back towards ancient Babylon. It is interesting to note how the female energy is also pushed to the fore and the male energy often demoted to slave class.

There is too much to go into my friend. Pick up a few books by Colin Wilson maybe and take the overview and decide for yourself.

It's up to you what you do and where you go and I am sorry if I jumped down your throat, I feel strongly about this subject is all.

This sounds really "good" and "healthy" doesn't it (plucked from my book collection - a pro-Shaman book believe it or not):

"The Shaman who has been elected by the spirits shows recognizable symptomology: he often becomes extremely nervous and withdrawn, and begins to act strangely. He may also experience epileptoid seizures - regarded by primitive peoples almost all over the world as the sign of a supernatural manifestation. The Siberian term for the psychological condition is amurakh: nervous, solitary, easily frightened, and with a proclivity for imitation and obscenitities" .....

Hmmm.... I wonder whose pulling those strings then

The Shaman way of life is not some kind of "Buffy-esque" teenage lifestyle choice. It is serious dabbling with spirit creatures. Fullstop.

    Apology accepted, but................

Wow! I'm glad that you got away from whatever group you were involved with, the information I've read about and groups I've been involved with all stress balance between male and female energy. Neither is better, they both have their functions in the natural scheme of things. However, if you want to talk about an imbalance of yin/yang energies, take a good long look at how some "Christians" interpret woman's role in the congregation............now there's some serious demotion to slave class status..........owned by her husband, not allowed to speak in church, has to wear a head covering when praying, can't teach men, encouraged to wear long hair, no makeup or jewelry, etc.........I could go on..............as far as the comments about Babylon, and worship of the moon goddess, well, there are people today who pretty much worship or make idols of alot of different things............like movie stars, singers, diet gurus, money, etc............it is up to these ones to decide if this is a good or bad thing for them.....................worship of who or whatever is a personal thing................many of us here on this board are no longer Christians, and our worship may be condemned in the Bible's eyes............to each their own................I'll check out that author you mentioned, tho, I like to keep an open mind.
