An even simpler way to know what Pharisees were like is to observe the high ranking JW's, Governing Body, WTS and the literature they publish. They are truly 20-21st Century Pharisees right down to the finest detail.

    G'day Esther,

Make that a cab sav! Isn't the taste of a good red just beautiful when you enjoy freedom?

    Cheers,

    Hi Somebody,

Vines Expo Dictionary of the NT says, "PHARISAIOS, from an Aramaic word peras (found in Dan 5:28), signifying to seperate, owing to a different manner of life from that of the general public." (...) "In their zeal for the law they almost deified it, and their attitude became merely, external, formal, and mechanical. They laid stress not upon the righteousness of an action, but upon its formal correctness."

Funny thing. My X's Mother recently told me, "the truth is a bit pharisaical..." and then she added this cooky metaphor, which I still don't figure, "its like the sun rising (or setting, I forget which) behind a row of buildings." !!!!!!!!! What the fskuhdvgf does THAT mean!

When I first started to look into the teachings of Jesus, I went out and bought a couple of books to help me. I bought a Bible
dictionary, and a Bible commentary. When I looked up " Pharisees" in my bible dictionary, it said [...]

    Schomebody,

I have a reference work. I wrote it. It is called:
The Tallyman's Intergalaktik Koncise Diktionary and Kommentary of the Bible

...and I forgot what I wrote about the Pharisees, so I looked it up again.

Okay, here is (partially) what it said:

    Pharisee.(pronounced) 'Fairy-Schee'. - def.

"a prominent group of hipperkritters who got the Ass-Kicking of their life by Jesus, My Main Man, not my Secondary, but my Primary..."

"they espoused the original Anal-Retentive doctrine still in practice today, by, most notably the Kult Leaders of the Watchtower society."

"the Pharisees were so devoted to Kleanliness, they thought it sinful to even defekate, and retained the fekal matter within. They were SO Full of Shit, that they 'had to go' ... ONCE a week - that's all.
...to remain in a klean state, they wiped so hard, their Asses became Raw. (that's when Jesus was not Kicking their Ass, of kourse!)"

"they were blind-folded and could not see straight, but of kourse, they peeked, and had a partikular pathologikal bent on going out and putting blindfolds on the kommon men and women... and vigorously spinning (the Pharisees were the original Spin Doctors, too) the people, making them dizzy... and then talked them into the direction of a Deep Hole, which pit the kommon people fell in."

"Jesus put the word out on the street about these Muthas and called them some Righteous words, like 'Mean Snakes', 'White-Washed Tombstones', 'Human Detritus'... etc. ... Jesus also would have called them 'White Trash', but since they were Jews, he had to refer to them as 'Olive Trash'"

    ...

these are just a few excerpts from my entry for "Pharisees"...

I have much more if you would like to read it from my Scholarly Tome.

BTW, you can borrow my copy of Ray's second book. (save schome $)
It's a signed copy (whoa!), so you'd have to take care of it.
I'm going to put it up for auction on eBay.

Thank you all for all the info provided!

You covered just about everthing, Drue.

    Philo,
I'm still scratching my head about your X's mother's metephor.

    Tally,

Thank you for offering me your copy of Ray's book. That's mighty nice of ya. I went to Border's today, and they didn't have it, so I ordered it. Besides that, I'm sure I'll want to write in it and highlight stuff throughout it. I'm sure you wouldn't have appreciated me writing in yours! I'd love to read more of your work from the scolarly tome! Your excerpts are great!

    peace,
    somebody
