We are going to visit Canada later this year with our two boys, aged 1 and 3, and wondered if anyone had any experience or tips for taking small kids on planes and keeping them amused for 8 hours.

Dog carriers....they fit right under the seat....keeps the little ones in one place.
Just kidding, of course. LOL Sorry, but I don't have any advice. The only trips I took on an airplane when my daughter was small were for business, so daughter and husband stayed home together....I flew alone.

Simon, I think with the time difference it would be best if you'd leave at night around their bedtime. Maybe if you're lucky they'll sleep at least half the flight away. On my last transcon flight I saw a Dad entertaining a little one with his laptop. Maybe you could take yours along. If worse comes to worse you could look out the window and scream there's a man on the wing, a la
Twilight Zone-The Movieand if you all sit real quiet and not talk he'll stop trying to tear the engine apart. Naaaaaaah. Just read to them.

Yes, Liam has quite a few games on his / my computer which I could take with us on my laptop. I could get some films as well on DVD for him to watch.
The dog carriers sound good for the little one though
Thanks for the advice ladies ! -

Simon, the two times I have taken the trip to Australia, Katie-Rose was 3 & 4 years old, respectively. It was a 27 hour plane ride, with three changes of planes in between. She slept, played video games and listened to children's music on the screen (which were on the back of each seat in the plane going across the Pacific). Also, I took a few books, puzzles, etc. on the plane to amuse her. She was a great traveler, but we made many trips to the bathroom just out of sheer boredom on her part!

My brothers and I flew on planes as young as 2. The important thing to check out is how their ears will be affected. Check with the doctor and see what he can do to make sure they are comfortable. If it is possible, let the 3-year-old see the inside of a plane, get an idea of what is going to happen. Have plenty of things to do if you can, games, storybooks, coloring books. Check with the airline too to see what they have in place to help young children traveling with parents.

When I read this, my first thought was "OMG, did Angharad have another baby and I completely didn't hear about it?" LOL!
