Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the women children that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.
*sigh*
It's not that I haven't seen this passage before. Of course not. It's not that I didn't know how terrible and regrettable it is. I did.
I just happened to look it up on WOL and see what Insight on the Scriptures says on the subject.
In the battle with Midian, the Israelites preserved alive only virgins from among the women and girls. (Nu 31:3, 18, 35) The Law allowed for the taking of a wife from among such parentless female war captives. (De 21:10-14)
The law allowed for the taking of a wife from parentless female war captives... After killing their families? The girl's mother, father, brother... All dead. How old is the girl? She could be a preteen. Maybe younger. She might even get killed if they thought she wasn't a virgin. (And how would they know?)
I am sorry, how is this a perfect law again? And how does Insight on the Scriptures so tersely and heartlessly breeze right over this? How do you write that and not immediately know it's wrong?
