I'm no specialist in theology Saint, but as far as I know polytheism often (not always) recognizes the many gods as just aspects of the One, intellectually unknowable and all embracing true Source...as in Hinduism and American Indian culture. These beliefs are far closer to "unity" than monotheism which often reduces the Source to but a tiny, tiny piece of the universe. So, to give them the benefit of "transitory stage" is, well , extremely kind . j

Then human civilization may be headed in the wrong direction, though it's very young, evolutionally speaking.

seedy3..The quotes used at that site are fortunately 3 party. Unfortunately the site sources thequotes to David Rohl. David Rohl has become popular with history revisionists like JCannon, his attempts to harmonise the OT with history required extensive and unsuported new chronologies. He is discredited at every archeaological web site I've visited.

Seedy3...After reading another of the links you posted I have to say that the site is sadly misguided. Rohl seems to be the go-to guy for most of the information. Recognise that his chronolgy is religiously motivated and is little more than subtle apologetics. Check the web for critical reviews of his work.

I think that fact that we are able and allowed to have this discussion means we are slowly moving in the right direction. Thomas, the good news IS that YHWH is not real. Some people do listen, those that want answers. I was one of them. You'll have to bring your own beer.

About asherah as a noun rather than denoting a distinct goddess, that is precisely the point Mark Baker makes in his analysis.

so pretty much what you are trying to get at is that each prophet saw what they thought was God, but had different personalities (i.e. the god of some of the books is loving towards his people, whereas the God of some other books is a violent, violent God...) Am i on the same page as you?

We are moving gradually to a unitary culture. I know that pisses off right wing christian republicans, because it's not their culture, but it's a fact. This has been going on noticably since the start of the roman empire. It used christianity to do it. When rome started on europe and britain, it was a mishmash of thousands of tribes. By evangelism, the sword, treaties and other programs europe was pounded into the image of the empire. Maybe the other empires that preceded this one, not to mention some smaller ones that grew at the same time, were part of the same unifying trend.

If/when world culture becomes more or less one, will the next stage be the recognition that diety is also one? Or, will it be a worldwide dictatorship? Or both?

It's as if you are saying "Hey, the ship is sinking!", but you bring no life boat; no good news, no beer

James.....is not your god as the "ultimate source" just as pseudo as the christian god? There is no proof that an ultimate source exists anymore than there is proof that a christian god exists/existed. In reality......nobody can make a postitive claim of an intellectual existing power who oversees us.....only 'guesses and hopes'.

    Actually Pete.

I have found some of his quotes somewhat out of context, but not very often, the reason I gave them was that what was quoted earlier was not totally out of line with what is the generally accepted in archeology and history.
