I know several IT managers who use Dell and have few problems. They have experienced great customer service. And they are not going bankrupt. Sorry.

Buy Apple instead - love those new Powerbooks and G5 towers.

BTW, the same few OEM companies make motherboards for HP, Dell, Gateway, etc. Solectron and Flextronics are two of the biggest OEMs. When you get to be as big as HP or Dell or Gateway, you don't have very many firms that can supply you - only a few can handle the volume load. So incoming QC, design validation, and support are the differences - actual build quality is largely the same over time (bad batches can queer the deal, of course).

My bro used to run computer mainframes at a major university up in Canada. He used to maintain them.

When he left his job and started doing something for far more pay, he bought a Dell for his home office. He always told me to just buy a dell rather than trying to rip off software, etc. You don't save any money building it yourself anymore, and Dell uses the best parts.

Buy a dell before you go to "Future Shop" and buy a crappy brand.

I have a 7 months old Dell Inspiron 8500 laptop that couldn't see the printer parallel port. I tried everything to fix it myself. I uninstalled the printer, the port and still nothing. The cable and the printer works fine with two other computers here. After a week of calling Dell, they told me it was an operating system problem and had me format the hard drive and reinstall xp. Grrrrrrrr

It still didn't work. I called Dell back and got a guy in the hardware service department and he had me unplug the cable and plug it back in and listen for a beep. He said if there was no beep, it was the motherboard. Of course there wasn't any beep.

He said there would be a mechanic at my house the next day to replace the mother board. Next day we had a big wind storm with snow but 5:15 pm the tech called and asked me if I wanted it fixed that day or first thing in the morning and I said morning. He was here at 8 am and had the motherboard replaced in less than an hour. Now it works fine.

I just had over a whole day restoring all my programs and docs from reinstalling xp when I would not have needed to. Still not all done. I guess it's just part of having a computer. I have a new xp Gateway desktop that I had to reinstall Windows the second month because it would not recognize it's internet connection.

I like this Dell laptop 100% better than the Gateway I used before this. This is much better. This Dell had two fans and it runs a lot cooler than the Gateway. This Dell has never crashed. The Gateway crashed all the time.

I'd buy another Dell. I'd rather buy a Dell than a Gateway because of the in home repair service. In the past with Gateway I have had to send things in for Warranty service. That sucks big time. GaryB

Our office has had big installs from a single vendor (not Dell), just as horrible. There were problems when we found out not all the computers were configured the same. This made the roll-out far more complicated for the IT techs. It sounds like Dell excels at building individual machines for home users, so maybe there were problems if the machines turned out to each have their own unique qualities.

Here is another thing to consider for big roll-outs in big offices. My stepmom started having trouble, and called the tech about her new machine. He found that her extra memory card had been removed. It turned out that a thief had removed the extra memory from most of the machines in the building! The IT tech told my stepmom that the case can be locked down, and there was the key nicely taped to the back.

My stepmom asked why weren't we told that when we got our new machine?

    Too late.

My home computer is a Dell - have had for a year and no problems.

Also have a compaq - numerous problems, but hey its 5 years old, and I am writing this on an IBM thinkpad - very few problems.

I read and post on a lot of stock message boards - lots of outrageous and unbased claims about this or that company going BK. People who post false information to affect stock prices are being investigated and sometimes prosecuted.

Dell's most recent financial report does not indicate anything close to BK.

Sorry to hear that your company is having so many problems.

    All best,

We only buy Dell computers at our office... no major problems at all. I recommend their business-class Optiplex/Latitude lines though. We also use only Dell PowerEdge systems for servers and they are very reliable.

One thing to watch out for is they moved their home support to India I believe (unless you buy Gold support). That's another reason I recommend buying their business line of computers... you'll get support from someone who actually speaks English well.
