Second Hand Lions and Lost in Translation

Dave and I are both suffering with miserable colds, so yesterday we rented 4 movies!! We watched two of them.

Dave laughed throughout "Lost in Translation" because he has worked in Japan, and so much of it was very familiar to him. I thought parts of it were really funny, but mainly it was just an okay movie.

On the other hand, "Second Hand Lions" was one of the best movies we've ever seen. It was a real feel good movie all the way through, and had a great ending. We both just loved it. It is a great movie for kids too. It's about two elderly men (Michael Caine and Robert Duvall) who are suddenly in charge of their grand nephew, who is about 13, played by Haley Joel Osment.

About Lost in Translation, I stayed at that hotel last year and it was as grand as it appears in the film. The story about meeting a movie star in the hotel is also not in any way improbable at all. On a prior trip, my boyfriend (literally) bumped into Robin Williams, and last month he saw Elijah Wood and other members of the cast of the Lord of the Rings who were in town to promote the movie. Not to mention Chow Yun Fat from an earlier trip! That's an amazing hotel. Did you know that it is on the top floors of the second tallest building in Tokyo, and if the doorman on the first floor recognizes you (if you do repeat business they ask if they could videotape you for a "promotional video" which is really a training video for their staff to know the repeat clients by sight), he will radio ahead to the general manager at the lobby so he will greet you when you step off the elevator!

Sorry to hear about your colds, Marilyn.

We've had rain for 5 days in a row! Yuck.

I went to get movies, but those two along with Calander Girls were already rented. So, we are stuck with some *yawn* interesting choices. Oh well. But I'll keep those on the "must see" list.

    That sounds pretty neat.

Dave said it was a riot when he and our son got to their hotel (they were in both Fukushima and Morioka City, North of Tokyo) and there was the robe and slippers for them to use. They are both very large men (tall and well built) and the slippers were like half sized for them, and the robes were useless. They might have fit me, but probably not. He really laughed when Bill Murray got in the shower too. He said the bathrooms were like a seperate, compact unit that is installed in a room. The showers were too short and they both had to bend their knees to fit under the water.

Their stories about the Sani-Kans on construction sites will make anyone roll on the floor. (definitely not designed for anyone over 5'10" and no seats............squat style)

We bought both of these movies and loved both of them. I especially loved Lost in Translation, I thought Bill Murray was absolutely brilliant. I'm not sure if he'll win the best actor nod vs. Sean Penn though....Mystic River was equally brilliant. We rented Swimming Pool this weekend, which was fantastic, highly recommended.

Lost in Translation was only good for the scenery. It was kinda of let down by the fact that Murray chose the older women than the young one to have a mid-life affair with-what a bummer. Plus, they should have expanded the scence where you cook your own food-I wanted to see that. Bottom line, not enough sex.

uh, you missed the point. lost in translation was great exactly because it wasn't about sex.

I know but if it's not about sex, what's the point really? I guess call me original, or maybe I watched it too late at night because I totally fell asleep.

Exactly right. I told Dave that I was going to be really mad if they did have sex. It would have ruined the story.

    Did you see "Seabiscuit...yet?...

    Yes!! Wonderful movie.
