Yesterday afternoon, one of the local elders called me. He said he wanted hear my assessment of how my Mom is doing, since she moved to assisted living, and if there was anything he could do. He was very nice, charming actually, and I had a couple of suggestions and he said he would get right on it.
Then he told me about the upcoming CO visit the end of April and then the date for the Memorial. A bit of small talk after I didn't react much, and then he said he would love it if we came to the KH again. I thanked him and told him he was the first one in FIVE YEARS to invite us to the Memorial. We have never met this elder because he moved here from Alaska a couple of years after we left, but I've talked with him about Mom several times. He was so sincere and so nice, so he said he knew things were handled badly in our situation. I said "you think?" He laughed, and then I said there was a lot of unfair gossip (true, but still not fair) and he said he realized that and apologized.
Then he accepted that we probably weren't coming to the Memorial, since I didn't agree to come, and said they would make arrangements to get Mom there. I thanked him for that and told him it would mean a lot to her to be there.
I told Dave about the invitation to the Memorial, and he said this "I would rather get a root canal done."
