I don't remember them mentioning that movie, but I was only 16 that summer, so I was probably cruising around looking for chicks....I do remember them saying something about Nirvana and since that was religious term, the band was demonic....I think I must've bought every Nirvana album 3 times growing up, since my parents kept throwing them out!

    I don't remember this.

    I remember this though.

In the sixties I aquired two albums: "Sergeant Pepper's Llonely Hearts Club Band" by the Beatles and "Their Satanic's Majesty's Request" by the Rolling Stones.

When I came into the Troof in 1969 I had to get rid of them because this kind of music was not appropiate for christians.

I got rid of both of them. (they were the first press; originals)

I don't recall this specific movie being mentioned, however, i do remember as a teen hearing in talks at the hall how bad the songs 'bridge over troubled water' and 'my way' were. The first apparently is about drugs (thanks for telling me, now that I know I need to smoke something) and the last because of an independent attitude (definitely a big sin, cuz, doncha know you might think for yourself and use your God-given brain and leave this ridiculous meeting).

The other thing I remember, and its kinda funny now that I'm in hardcore fade I've been remembering little snippets of 'the light getting brighter and brighter' for myself when I was really a 'good jw' ( is there such a thing?). Anyway, the other thing was a pt discussing things associated with spiritism and a huge long list was read out with stuff like horoscopes etc and black holes were mentioned???? My little science-interested mind went screeeeeech, WHAT, did I hear that right? What hokey, but wait a minute, maybe there's something to it, oooohhhh, fear, fear, I better be careful, the bros must know something I don't. The list sure seemed like it was part of the outline, and since I have most of them, I should look for it and see if its been 'updated' or still the old way. I'm sure they got rid of it now since black holes have been commonly mentioned in Awake for years.

I think the Police were on the 'bad' list because Sting related having some song ideas or lyrics come from his dreams, and don't forget the one album title 'Ghost in the Machine' - baaaad, baaaaaad.

I don't remember "The Firm" being talked about, but I do remember some witnesses saying that "E.T." was bad, because E.T. was really supposed to be Jesus.

I was told that we should not listen to any musician who was gay.

Michael Jackson was a no no because he da'd himself.

    Thanks, everybody.

No to that guy, this is the topic.

I remember I tried to buy Nirvana's Nevermind and my mom wouldnt let me because she saw the titles on the back and decided that they "Territorial Pissing" was just a name used for shock value so I would buy it and they are a shock value group that has nothing to contribute.

What a hypocrtie. I remember like the same year at the Sunday talk a visiting elder gave a talk and ridiculed the movie "Basic Instinict" (1992) and then described the opening scene in detail. I could feel my mom squirm because I know she just saw with my dad and had taped it PPV. I think at that point I had already seen it too. That's a movie you have to be older to appreciate, I'll admit. It keeps getting better everytime I see it.

I also remember one time when a few of us teens were chaparoned out for some fun to go see "The Addams Family" (1991) and "Stop or My Mom Will Shoot" (1991). They got sold out so we went bowling instead and in the car ride back the subject came up and I said that I had scene "Terminator 2" (1991) several times and that is was a great movie and the older girl in the front actually started crying because I said this. For real guys no joke, she was like 15 or 16 I was like 11. So me and my friend who was like 14 or 15 starting laughing at her. We thought it was sooo hilarious that she was seriously crying.

From my recollection, the specific movies that would get denounced were largely up to the speaker or whoever prepared the demonstration. I'm not sure if the WT itself actually sent out scripts for everything. I believe that the participants would write the scripts. So the movie would pretty much be a matter of personal choice made on the basis of advertising and first impressions filtered through a person's hangups and inner conflicts.

Ergo, the ones that denounced sexy movies were secret horndogs. The ones that hated violence would probably beat their wives or drink too much or both. the ones who denounced the national anthem the loudest were the ones that would have joined the army and voted republican ...

This stuff really just makes me sick to my stomach.

By doing this, they're essentially insinuating that we, the Sheep, were so impressionable and innocent and vulnerable that seeing ONE MOVIE or listening to ONE SONG could totally screw with our relationship with Jehovah!

What kind of a word is "relationship" in a Godly context, anyway? Let's find out:

Noun: Relationship: A state involving mutual dealings between people or parties or countries

Mutual dealings? What the fark is mutual about prayer? In reality, prayer is a lot like sending UDP packets across the Internet - you never know if they've reached their destination. Of course, sometimes the other computer will send back it's own UDP packets, and that's what makes it work, so this is in fact the worst possible example to use to illustrate the average human's relationship with Jehover, because, to the best of my knowledge, no reputable evidence exists of Jehover replying.

Whoops, probably offended half the board with that last paragraph. But isn't that what's really going on? We've been DUPED! Well, you can't please all the people all the time, unless you're a porn star!

Back to the topic.Yeah, Witnesses take immense pleasure in telling each other that this song or that movie is "bad", using an entirely arbitrary classification scale. But God help you if you do go and watch that movie! Satan is using it to enter your mind, y'know!

The funny thing is that anyone who ever questions the Godly authority of the Governing Body is instantly DF'ed. In fact, word has it that a number of confrontations between members of this board and the Elders have involved the Elders asking the posters whether they still believed that the Faithful and Discreet Slave (what a ridiculous name) were God's chosen channel. You'd think that there would be some sort of peer review process, the same sort that helps scientists to check each other's results and make sure that the other scientists wasn't fooling around or fudging the numbers to get better funding.

Do the Witnesses have this facility? NOPE! If you don't like your leaders, you can go jump in the lake! And make sure it's one of those really cold Norwegian ones where you have to hack through two feet of ice to get into it first!

No, what this comes down to is a bunch of people who think that they can determine what other people should watch (cf. many totalitarian governments, e.g. China) and listen to. However, nobody is allowed to tell them what to do! Oh no! That would be blasphemy!

My God, I'm getting all worked up about the doings of a bunch of eight guys in Manhattan. It ain't fair! I should be out playing football or something, but here I am...grrr...well, I enjoy it. It's a relief.

    Regards,

No problem. Relaying your observations is what this is all about. I got a mild chuckle out of it.

I can remember Basic Instinct being mentioned in a public talk. As well, at a District Assembly they mentioned Nine Inch Nails/The Downward Spiral (beastiality), TLC (because of the album crazysexycool!!) and Snoop Doggy Dogg. The speaker referred to the latter as "Snoopy Dogg Dogg" which made every young person in the joint bust a gut. It was always ridiculous as the 60 year old speakers had no clue what they were talking about.

Many bands were blacklisted by JWs simply because of misunderstood names, or taking lyrics literally. I remember Beck's "Loser" being quoted as well as being an endorsement of murder... obviously hyperbole, metaphor and simple poetry were lost on these fools. My first wife's dad was an elder and I remember gettign my hands on a blacklist of bands that some of the local elders passed around to keep track of what music was acceptable and what wasn't. It was absolutely hilarious.

I just got back from the local artsy-fartsy movie place, where I saw City of God. What an incredible film. And no dub will ever see it. What a shame.
