Ashley, there are some active JW's here, but most of us have learned the truth about "the truth". Please allow yourself to be open minded and don't leave just because someone tells you not to listen to people like us. I am not disfellowshipped. You can ask me anything.

Hello, Path, nice to see you again.
Ashley:
That's a very noble goal. I've never been to Australia but I hear it's very beautiful. There are people here that hail from that continent. Hey, is Circare around?
As someone already mentioned I hope that your plans for your future include a college education. I wish you well.-Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it-

hi ashley
and welcome- just wanted to give you a heads up about this site-
this site deals with very heavy issues that go to the heart and soul of concerns that many brothers and sisters have.
it deals with many questions that the friends have ,but are simply afraid to ask for being label disloyalyet if you are a student who loves knowledge and are willing the do the RESEARCH AND ck references that will be quoted here YOU WILL find some very interesting things about the organization that many of us never knew.
but if you decided to leave we wish you well
but remeber this:
if someone makes a statement here ASK THEM TO GIVE YOU THE REF SO YOU CAN look it for yourself NEVER ACCEPT ANYTHING SOMEONE TELLS Just because they said so BE LIKE THE Boreans they cked out everyting that Paul told them and he commended them for doing so
don't you count our change when you get it back at the store- so why would you ck and count $2.46 in change and not ck and count as it where things you are told that will affect your very life
welcome again
James

Hello Ashley:
There are about a hundred regular posters to this board and no two of them have the same viewpoint. Some are JWs, some others have never been associated, and some were JWs for many years but are inactive or have left for various reasons. Also, there are a couple of kooks, but don't mind them.
I'm glad that there is a variety of opinion, just as I am glad that there is a variety of cultures in the world. I for one am grateful that I've had the opportunity to visit Canada many times (Ontario and Quebec, haven't yet been to B. C.) and I've enjoyed the friendly people I've met in our neighbor to the north. Also, I think that Canadian beer is far superior to anything from Europe, although I hope that you don't have too much experience with that particular topic.
You are a young person compared to most of us. Being seventeen can be wonderful as it is a time for exploration and so I hope that you are considering college; too many of us here have had that delayed or deferred. It can still be done when you're thirty or older, but it's better to do it when most of the students are the same age as you so that you can help teach each other. Having an open mind is a big help in this and other things.

Hi Ashley
Welcome to the forum.
Goals are good to have. We must also be realistic about them.
As we live in a technocracy, more education and training is needed just to supply life's neccesities. Please do think about attending college. It opens up a whole new world of ideas. Learning about people, other cultures, etc. Anthropology is great course of study to become acquainted with this.
Australia is a great place, hope to go there myself one day soon.
I'm going to make a personal study/research about it's aboriginal peoples (if I cant find a local college offering the course when I can attend) There's lots to learn about OZ(as the Aussies here call it)
There are several here on this forum, wonderful people. Hope you get to meet them and know them.
Regards,Tina -

Hi Ashley,
I too was home schooled, and began pioneering at an early age. I am now 28 years old with no college background. It is very hard to support a family on the limited income that I receive.
Just a friendly suggestion, from a guy who's been there. Go to college.

Hello again Ashley:
I am reminded of a young woman I know, about two years older than you, who is also from Canada and who works in the United States during the summers. A couple of years ago she applied for financial aid for college and received enough to cover all of her tuition and campus housing expenses. I think part of it was from funds set aside by the government for helping Canadians with Inuit ancestry, but a lot of assistance is available for any prospective student who might ask for it.
Anyway, she is really nice and she is also quite proud to be a Canadian. Sometimes I've seen her with a colorful shirt that has a big logo on the front: "I Am Canada". She enjoys college and from her description of some of the parties, maybe she enjoys it a bit too much. Yet she is a serious student and doesn't let it interfere with her education.
As others and myself have said, please consider a college education. You seem like an active and intelligent person, and if you don't try for college, you will very likely regret that decision as time goes by. What you may not know is that the Society for many years strongly discouraged college attendance and did not change the teaching until around 1992. This is why there are some long timers on this discussion board who, like myself, push education so strongly as we fear that some younger JWs may not have a family history of college attendance.
It may be that some will discourage you from trying college and might even consider it an indicator of selfishness. But I disagree; I think it's okay to be a little selfish early in life if you are doing something that will enable you to help so many others later in life.

Hi Ashley, and welcome!
I am also new to this forum, having been here about two weeks. I am currently a Witness and have been active for nearly 30 years (I am in my early 40's).
Some of the replies to your post have rightly cautioned you that this site may not be what you think. Thus far, after having read postings on this site for several months before joining, I would say that, indeed, there are some excellent lines of thought going on here concerning matters seldom raised in conversations with Witnesses, often out of fear of being thought of as spiritually weak or disloyal. Personally, I like to consider more than one side of an argument before drawing conclusions, and you will find here that indeed there are viewpoints presented that are at times at variance to the WTBS's teachings. You will find others that agree with the views of the WTBS. Whatever the case, my advice would be try to be open-minded when you spend time posting or reading items in this site.

Hi Ashly and welcome to the board
I live in Brisbane where you visited.
When you come over here to work, why not try to do some seasonal work like fruit picking etc. If you keep in contact with Backpackers etc you can get a lot of work from Cairns down to South Australia.
A good goal to travel .... really gives you insight on the real world.
