The Pornography Plague?Resist It!
GREEDY money lovers, and those who have "gone out after flesh for unnatural use," have flooded the world with highly contagious material in movies, videos, plays, books, magazines, and music?a plague of pornography. (Jude 7) Thus the U.S. Attorney General?s Commission on Pornography, in visits to just 16 stores, was able to catalogue "2,325 separate magazine titles, 725 books, and 2,370 film titles" of pornographic matter.
With little thought as to the havoc they create in the lives of others, these "pornocrats" callously lower the moral climate of society and contribute to the epidemics of fornication, adultery, incest, sexually transmitted diseases, perversions, divorces, broken homes, disturbed children, and physically and psychologically damaged marriage mates.
Can you protect your family from this plague? If you have become addicted to porn, is there any way to break free? The answer to both questions is yes! How?
Porn problems thrive in an environment of infectious wrong attitudes where there exists little resistance to "the works of the flesh." (Galatians 5:19) Such problems flourish when people lack or ignore accurate knowledge and allow wrong information to pollute the mind. Our best defense against porn, then, is to build spirituality and individual immunity by cultivating healthy attitudes based on sound knowledge. To do this requires that we uncompromisingly embrace, as antidotes to porn, the following Bible viewpoints.
Right
Attitude Toward Sex
The first prevalent wrong attitude to resist is that toward sex itself. Jehovah God created the male and the female with sexual desire for the purpose of procreation, as well as to bring them pleasure as a married couple. (Genesis 1:27, 28; 2:18; Matthew 19:4-6) Thus if sexual relations are viewed as a means of mutual expression of love by marriage mates and not as a means of exploiting others or merely for the gratifying of self, it will help us to resist pornography.?1 Corinthians 7:3; Acts 20:35.
To abuse sex dishonors its Designer and brings harm to the abuser. Hunger for food is also designed by God for our good and pleasure. But if abused by excesses or by ingesting polluted food, harm can result. Therefore, do not become greedy?idolizing sex. Rather, control "your body members . . . as respects . . . sexual appetite, hurtful desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry."?Colossians 3:5, 6; Ephesians 5:5.
When ancient cultures idolized sex, they "exchanged the truth of God for the lie and venerated and rendered sacred service to the creation rather than the One who created." That led to "disgraceful sexual appetites," excesses that polluted them. Thus, "both their females changed the natural use of themselves into one contrary to nature; and likewise even the males left the natural use of the female."?Romans 1:25-27.

Attitude Toward Women
Many pornographic presentations nowadays are of women subjected to rape, degradation, and violence. So your family must see pornography as a vicious attack upon womankind. Porn conveys the seductive idea that females are meant to be and even want to be thus maltreated?that they actually experience pleasure when raped and otherwise hurt. That is a base lie.
No decent male can have such an attitude toward women. God made both male and female. The woman was to be man?s complement, not his inferior deserving of ill-treatment. (Genesis 2:18) Rather than maltreat the body of any woman, the Bible tells men to deal with "older women as mothers, younger women as sisters with all chasteness." (1 Timothy 5:2) And instead of subjecting wives to the perversions that porn advocates, "husbands ought to be loving their wives as their own bodies."?Ephesians 5:28, 29.

Attitude Toward Children
Annually, children by the thousands?often just tots?are sexually abused, some by their neighbors and family friends, others by incestuous practices of their own parents and other family members. Porn plays a big part in suggesting that this abuse is acceptable. Thousands more are kidnapped, raped, and prostituted by sexually depraved pornographers. What an unfeeling betrayal of innocent, defenseless children!
"Sons are an inheritance from Jehovah," the Bible says. (Psalm 127:3) Your family members need to respect that inheritance and its Source and not entertain unwholesome attitudes toward the young in their own or other families. Sexual abuse of minors does physical and emotional damage and corrupts. It is a cruel lie to say that children are benefited by such abuse.
Hence, pornography is based upon God-dishonoring lies, wicked misrepresentations as to sex, women, and children. The sickening fruitage from propagating the lies tells us who the father of such lies must be. (John 8:44) In view of this, genuine Christians who wish to maintain a clean relationship with their heavenly Father cannot have anything to do with pornography!
Other
Perilous Attitudes
Various excuses are made to justify use or tolerance of pornography. You must see the danger in these excuses if you are to be immune to the harm that can be wrought by this plague.
?Use
of porn can enhance your married sex life.? The reverse?degeneration?has resulted for many. Some, feeding on porn, are no longer able to enjoy normal sex lives. Fantasizing with lurid magazines, one husband went from forcing perversions on his wife to bisexual affairs. His wife plaintively asks: "[Why can] my husband have sex with magazines but not with me?" Another wife says that her husband stays up all night to watch TV porn, yet he ?has no interest in normal sexual relations.? In other cases, marriages disintegrated when husbands insisted on practicing the perversions seen in movies or magazines.
?A
little soft porn won?t hurt anyone.? That is as deceptive as saying that ?a little use of soft drugs won?t hurt anyone.? A clinical psychologist explains: "I find there is an escalation factor in which the person increasingly wants to see and be exposed to more and more deviant obscene material . . . more explicit material to give the person his ?kicks.?" Others agree, pointing to the present trend to more violent hard-core material.
?There
are some well-written articles on interesting topics in some of the better-class sex magazines. As long as I just read those and only admire the excellent photography, it won?t hurt me.? But why look through a garbage can for wholesome food? And do not forget the real danger to "everyone that keeps on looking at a woman so as to have a passion for her." (Matthew 5:28) As for the excellent photography, slick paper, and first-rate reproduction, remember, gold-plating a garbage can doesn?t change the contents.
Breaking
Free From Porn Addiction
But what if you have a strong attachment to porn and find it hard to give it up? The psychologist quoted before also said: "I find that there is an addiction to pornography. The individual . . . gets ?hooked? . . . and comes back again and again for more." Yet, as with other addictions, one can break free.
If you have the problem, an obvious first step is to stop feeding your mind on the filth itself, cutting off the source of contamination. (Matthew 5:29, 30) Yes, get rid of all the material that would be a temptation to resort to fantasizing. Would you tolerate an ancient phallic image in your home? Then why permit these modern expressions of sex worship there? Early Christians were quick to dispose of even costly items that posed a threat to their clean relationship with Jehovah.?Acts 19:19.
And, as with other addictions, to break free requires the addicted person humbly to admit that he has the problem, that he really wants to quit it, and then earnestly seek qualified help. The Christians just referred to were quite willing to seek help from mature believers of their time. (Acts 19:18) Your own sincere prayers and those of your spiritual brothers will provide a source of strength not available elsewhere.?James 5:13-16.
Flushing out the mind with clean waters of truth and keeping it filled with pure teaching that expresses the "perfect will of God" will make it possible for unhealthy mental images gradually to fade. In this way the circuits that would keep these mental images vivid and still infectious will be erased.?Romans 12:2; Ephesians 4:17-24.
Genuine love for God and neighbor will help you break the porn habit as well as protect you from ever again becoming involved with it. Pornography is the message of modern sex worship. It stands for everything that is opposed to God and righteousness. It must be rejected outright. Avoid it like the plague it is!
There are those who advocate ignoring it as a passing thing that will cure itself when people get filled or bored with it. But is that the way to handle life-threatening filth? We do not fix a leaking cesspool by ignoring it, allowing it to overflow, hoping it will somehow heal itself. You must take action!
What
Will You Do?
It may be true that not all are affected alike by such material. However, if we admit that the intent of such material and the reasons why it is viewed are not wholesome, then we have a conscientious decision to make, just as we would have with any other threat to our well-being. This plague must be resisted.
Face the fact that the porn plague is a reflection of the declining morals of our times as foretold in the Bible. (2 Timothy 3:1-6) History and experience tell us that despite laws and regulations, people who want pornographic material will find a way to make, distribute, and consume it.
Thus there are feminists who vehemently deplore exploitation and maltreatment of women by pornographers and porn addicts but who nevertheless will, at the same time, express reservations about a total ban on smut. They speak favorably of "erotica" for their own use that portrays what these feminists call "sexual expression between two people who desire each other and who have entered this relationship with mutual agreement." Gay men also wish to reserve for themselves the right to make and view their own "victimless" homosexual pornography.?2 Peter 2:18, 19.
Obviously, if we listen to the self-serving excuses of these and others who are ?sowing with a view to the flesh,? we will soon get lost in a maze of hairsplitting philosophical arguments as to what is and what is not porn, erotica, and art. (Galatians 6:8) No matter what people call the material, when it displays for sexual arousal what the Bible calls unnatural and obscene?fornication, adultery, homosexuality, bestiality, incest, rape?then a Christian knows such is not fitting for him to view, since such should "not even be mentioned among" Christians.?Ephesians 5:3-5; Hebrews 13:4; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11; Leviticus 18:6-30.
From all the above, it should be clear that pornography must be included among those things "shameful even to relate." It animalizes sex. So, "let no man deceive you with empty words, for because of the aforesaid things the wrath of God is coming . . . Therefore do not become partakers with them . . . Quit sharing with them in the unfruitful works that belong to the darkness, but, rather, even be reproving them."?Ephesians 5:6-15.
Yes, successfully resist the plague of pornography by seeing it for what it is: a medium for sex worship. Vigorously reject it and its lies, uncleanness, and idolatry. Remember: "Those who practice such things will not inherit God?s kingdom." True Christians have "impaled the flesh together with its passions and desires." So, "keep walking by spirit and you will carry out no fleshly desire at all." (Galatians 5:16-24) Succumbing to the porn plague means death, but doing God?s will means life.?1 John 2:15-17.[Box on page 10]"As New York Law School professor Ernest van den Haag has pointed out, ?Some argue that pornography has no actual influence. Child Molesting?Every Mother?s Nightmare
FOR the young mother, it was a nightmare come true. When her four-year-old daughter complained of abdominal pains, she took her to see a doctor. The doctor, after a thorough examination, gravely told the mother that her little girl was the victim of sexual molestation. She had been raped. The mother informed the New York City authorities, who quickly determined that the abuse occurred at a Bronx, New York, day-care center.
Investigations at the center yielded horrifying results. First one, then another, then still another child revealed that they, too, had been molested. At least 30 children eventually claimed that they had been abused in that same center. One of them had gonorrhea. Then reports surfaced that children had been molested at another day-care center. Then at another. Eventually seven day-care centers had to be investigated in the New York City area alone.
As each new case was publicized, reports of child molesting started coming in from other parts of the country. The scandal spread. Parents asked one another: "What?s happening?" What indeed! Was this just a freakish rash of molestation incidents? Or was it something very widespread that was only now being noticed?
A Widespread Problem
The fact is, sexual molestation of children has been going on for a long time and today it is widespread. In 1983, the head of New York City?s Advisory Task Force on Rape reported ?a dramatic increase in the number of young children who are victims of rape, incest, and other forms of sexual abuse.? Dr. David Finkelhor of the Family Violence Research Program at the University of New Hampshire conducted a large-scale study of the subject. He found that the children of 9 percent of the parents interviewed had been sexually abused. Fifteen percent of the women and 6 percent of the men had themselves been sexually abused as children!
Exact statistics are difficult to come by. In the United States, the National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect has records of 55,399 cases of children being sexually molested in one year. But these are only cases of incestuous abuse. Abuse by friends, neighbors, teachers, and so forth?as well as by strangers?would increase that figure to a considerable extent. And a spokesman for the Child Welfare League of America told Awake! that "the figures we have are only the tip of the iceberg."
A report in the magazine Ladies Home Journal estimates: "Sexual abuse of young girls is four times more common than rape of adult women. Between the ages of five and 13, one in four little girls falls prey to some form of sexual abuse by adults?whether it be exhibitionism, inappropriate fondling, rape, or incest. Although young females are the most common victims, 20 to 25 percent of those attacked are little boys."
Doctors are convinced of the harmful and long-term effects of such abuse. Hence, parents wonder: ?Are my children at risk? What steps can I take to protect them? What sort of person would try to harm them??

? Violence against children has become "an unforeseen blast of wickedness" that is sweeping through Italy, says the weekly L?Espresso. There are 15,000 acts of brutality against children each year, including 600 sexual abuses. These chilling figures do not reveal the extent of the problem, according to Judge Dosi of the Juvenile Court in Rome. He says: "The statistics on this phenomenon tell us so little that we call them ?the obscure number,? obscure because it hides a more complex and diffused reality." What drives parents to abuse their children? "First of all the bad relationship of the couple; then the difficulty to live up to the role of parent," are two basic reasons the report lists.

Child Abuse?The Spin-off Epidemic
CONSTANT obsession with sex and more sex leads to more abnormal cravings. One of the most depraved practices crawling into view is sexual abuse of children. How widespread is this? No one really knows, but a 1982 report on child abuse in the United States estimates that at least 1.5 million cases go unreported or unbelieved.
Sexual abuse of children can be anything from indecent exposure to rape. One of its uglier forms is child pornography. Children are photographed in sexually explicit poses, sometimes of unimaginable depravity, and the photographs are sold to pedophiles, morally sick individuals who find children sexually attractive.
Another aspect of this spin-off epidemic is the problem of incest. "As recently as 15 years ago, experts claimed that incest . . . occurred in only one out of a million families," Reader?s Digest reported in January 1981. "Now some professionals believe the actual incidence could be as high as one in a hundred."
Are you horrified even to contemplate the sexual use of children? Not everyone shares your feelings. The official publication of the Sex Information and Education Council of the United States has suggested that incest with the children at home might be better than so much teenage fornication outside the home!
In Los Angeles there exists the Rene Guyon Society, reportedly made up of doctors, lawyers and other men and women in respected, influential positions, whose members believe that young children should experience sex. The group?s slogan is, "Sex by age eight, or it?s too late." This group is reported as using child pornography to stimulate youngsters.
Then there is NAMBLA (North American Man-Boy Love Association), a homosexual group interested in promoting "love" between men and boys. Such ideas of "love" remind one of the Bible proverb: "The mercies of the wicked ones are cruel." (Proverbs 12:10) Many children today suffer from such cruelty.
And while the sexual abuse of children gets worse, other kinds of abuse are not lagging behind. As never before, children are tasting parental violence. Homicide is one of the five leading causes of death among children in the United States. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), in recent years such homicides have risen at a shocking rate and one third of these are at the hands of parents or stepparents. In most cases the 1- to 17-year-olds are killed with guns, knives or by strangulation.

Pimps and pornographers prey on the young and helpless
THE fastest-growing industry in America today is a brutalizing and depraved business?child vice. It employs more than half a million youngsters. Most of them are runaways, from homes to big cities, where they become vulnerable, easy prey to pimps and pornographers.
"Baby pros," child prostitutes, are used and abused by pimps. In the Times Square area of New York city 800 pimps control thousands and thousands of girls. Records disclose that hundreds and hundreds of these children have been brutalized, beaten, tortured and raped by their pimps. Some prostitutes end up murdered. Yet prostitution is called a "victimless crime."
Pornography dips into the even younger age brackets. Children as young as three and four years of age?who often end up in mental institutions or hustling on the streets?can be found doing unbelievable things in front of cameras. But if seeing is believing, then it must be believed, because it is there to be seen in pornographic movies and magazines. Five- and six-year-olds are exploited, engaging in every imaginable sexual activity and perversion, including masturbation, sodomy, sadomasochism and even incest.
Pornography started out comparatively mild, but quickly escalated to meet the increasing demands of quickly jaded perverted appetites. It began with nudity, which moved into simulated male-female intercourse, and from there to actual intercourse. Then came homosexual activities, men with men and women with women. Bestiality was next. And, finally, child pornography, called "kiddie porn." Children were shown in both homosexual and heterosexual activities, sometimes children with children, sometimes children with adults. By now "kiddie porn" has skyrocketed into a multibillion-dollar business, and yearly uses 300,000 children under sixteen.
Why such interest sexually in young children? They have been promoted by the media as sex objects. Advertisers pose them with their products, provocatively so, with windblown hair and pouting, promising lips. The young especially attract men who are afraid of adult women, psychiatrists say. The modern woman, the liberated female, equal and even a competitor, intimidates these insecure men. But the young girls, sexily attired and posed, look vulnerable, are nothing to fear, and are therefore inviting to such men. Presented as sex objects, these youngsters become sex targets.
Derek Eaves, a forensic psychiatrist who works with sexual offenders is worried: "There is an enormous increase in crimes against children." He considers society to be in a moral crisis. A Columbia University professor says that provocatively posing little girls means "they are for sale" and is a step taken toward the destruction of Western values. Daniel Cappon, analytical psychotherapist, says: "We?ve entered the new Dark Ages of society. We?re living through the black ages of degeneracy. Darkness has descended on our psyche; people are more brutalized now than ever before." Strong language, but maybe not too strong, when you read of a thirty-three-month-old girl assaulted by a fifty-one-year-old man. Or consider the sickness that?s evident when pornographers photograph and pedophiles (those who lust after children) buy pictures of a seven-month-old girl with her legs spread apart.
Psychologists Victor Cline and Frank Osanka scoff at the idea that pornography is a "victimless crime." Osanka says: "Child pornography is nothing less than the photographic record of the sexual abuse of children, and the severe psychological effect of that has been clearly established." Cline says: "The potential for real psychological harm from continual exposure to pornography is significant."
The pro-pornography groups, of course, see no harm in their sickness. Several groups, such as the Pedophile Liberation Organization, the Pedophile Information Exchange and the Childhood Sexuality Circle, are mounting a counterattack against opposers. They maintain secret underground networks that operate nationally and allow them to barter and exchange millions of dollars? worth of filth. Some of these national and international organizations are now surfacing to push for their "rights." Pedophiles see no harm in "kiddie porn," only because they are blinded by their own lust.
But the children used in it are harmed, often ending up peddling sex on the streets and having trouble seeing themselves as desirable in any way other than as a commodity, a sex object with a price tag. Here again, as in the case of small boys sodomized by grown men, the courts have problems seeing "kiddie porn" as obscenity. "There is a widespread fear that prohibiting a ten-year-old from appearing in a pornographic film might violate that child?s First Amendment rights."
Incredibly, even some parents appear in "kiddie porn" films using their own children! And that brings us to the subject of the next article?INCEST.

HAWKS swoop down on chickens, and farmers keep loaded shotguns handy to blast the hawks. Today, however, those words can carry a different connotation. The "chickens" are young boys, the "hawks" are adult homosexuals, but the analogy ends there. The farmers are missing. The laws are inadequate, enforcement is poor, the judges are lenient and the "chickens" become victims. This problem is not new. It goes all the way back to Sodom and Gomorrah. But the last decade has seen an increasingly aggressive pursuit of "chickens" by the "hawks." Their brazenness has scandalized those elements of society still able to be scandalized.
In both New York City and in Los Angeles some claim that boys are more in demand than girls. A Los Angeles police sergeant who works with child vice says: "The figures for this area show that it?s between 70 and 75 percent boys to 25 percent girls." In Massachusetts a call-boy operation was discovered, where 250 boys were available for sex anywhere in the state for $50 and up. It turned out to be, however, only a branch of a national network headquartered in Houston, Texas. "Hawks" could call there from anywhere in the country and order "chickens" by telephone. Within half an hour a boy would be at the caller?s door, provided the "hawk?s" credit card cleared.
The "hawks" have formed groups and demand respectability. The Rene Guyon organization, based in California, boasts 8,500 members. Their motto is "Sex by eight or it?s too late." Numerous other man-boy sex organizations exist. Lists are compiled that show where boys can be picked up in every state. One such organization has headquarters in London, with branches in the United States and other countries. The homosexuals are pushing for changing the laws to lower the age of consent and to legalize sex between adults and children. They are fighting for children?s rights, they say, and make themselves out to be crusaders. The Gay Community News said:
"The gay liberation movement is fighting not merely for the rights of adults to engage freely in homoerotic acts, but also for the millions of our society?s children to enjoy a free sexual life . . . and [for] the rights of children to control their own bodies. At a time when abuse of children by their parents is epidemic, it is ironic that it is men who love boys who are made into the ultimate criminal."
Children?s rights to be abused, prostituted, sodomized? Their proclaimed concern for children?s rights is a cover-up for men whose only interest is gratification of their own sexual perversion. When the children become a little older these "loving" adults dump them back on the streets and pick up new victims. Willing or not, children at these tender ages are unable to understand the choice they are making or to foresee the consequences. They are victims. They are vulnerable. Misguidedly they seek affection from a homosexual and are psychologically devastated when they are cast off. Some are murdered. One homosexual man killed thirty-three boys and buried them under his house. Where has all that supposedly great love gone?
Support for homosexual causes comes from strange sources. The Bible is clear on its view of homosexuality. Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because of their practice of it. The Mosaic law forbade it, under penalty of death: "When a man lies down with a male the same as one lies down with a woman, both of them have done a detestable thing. They should be put to death without fail. Their own blood is upon them." The same position is expressed in the Christian Greek Scriptures concerning such men: "God gave them up to disgraceful sexual appetites, for both their females changed the natural use of themselves into one contrary to nature; and likewise even the males left the natural use of the female and became violently inflamed in their lust toward one another, males with males, working what is obscene."?Leviticus 20:13; Romans 1:26, 27.
In spite of these Biblical denunciations, many clergymen and churches speak up for the homosexuals. San Francisco, the population of which is 30 percent homosexual, illustrates the point. One news report reads: "Much of the tolerance comes, somewhat surprisingly perhaps, from organized religion?from the major Protestant, Anglican, Roman Catholic, and Jewish churches and synagogues. . . . Rev. Otto Sommers, the 50-year-old conference minister of Maine?s 250 United Church of Christ congregations, . . . says: ?Homosexual sex, just like heterosexual sex, is a gift of God to be lived under the ethic of love. We all live under Christ.?"
Notwithstanding the pronouncements of many of today?s religious leaders and their church organizations, Jehovah God?s view of homosexuality has not changed. And, concerning conditions on earth at the time of his second coming, Christ Jesus said: "Just as it occurred in the days of Lot . . . the same way it will be on that day when the Son of man is to be revealed."?Luke 17:28-30.[Box on page 5]"The men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, from boy to old man, all the people in one mob. And they kept calling out to Lot and saying to him: ?Where are the men who came in to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may have intercourse with them.?"?Genesis 19:4, 5
