In both scenerios, a viable option is left out.
logically speaking, if I were in view of such events, I would reasonably conclude that I were also within earshot.
I would yell and scream "runaway train"!! or some such.
Which would you do? Either? Neither? Both?

First scenario - I would engage the emergency secondary brake system in case of primary brake system failure.
Second scenario - I would run into a phone booth, change into my superhero costume and save the day. (I would've changed into my superhero suit in the first scenario, except that you need two hands to do that.)

Assuming that the emergency secondary brake system also failed (what are the chances of that, LoL) I would activate what is known to trolley industry insiders as the "C.C.B.B." system.

First..I'd drive to Portland and kick your ass for asking Starfleet questions similar to the Kobiashi Maru
Second...The train would have crashed and killed everyone because I've never driven one before
Third...I'd be blowing that big frigginn Horn that trains have and flashing my Cyclops headlight which they have as well and no-one would die...or are they deaf?

Oh for the second question
If the body of one man will stop a trolley I think a group of five men would not suffer to much damage if hit by the same trolley...

hhmmm in either case you make a conscious decision to take someone's life...either by switching tracks or by pushing them. Why is one ok and the other not? What is the difference between pulling a switch or pushing the guy to save 5 others? Funny how the mind rationalizes isn't it?
Makes you think about modern warfare huh? How much easier to pull a switch and kill someone then to actually have to look them in the eye when you pull the trigger.
Personally I don't know what I would do...

Craig, if you're steering the trolley, couldn't you aim straight for the center of the fork, crash the trolley off of that tracks at that point, possibly kill yourself, and save all the others?
