Armageddon -- truth or fiction?

I happened to see something on the History channel the other night and, as I was half-listening, I thought the comments were made that the word/name "Armageddon" doesn't actually appear in the bible. How could that be as much as it is used? I did a quick search thru my electronic "e-Sword" bible program and couldn't find any mention of the name in any versions. What gives?

The History channel show said Amageddon was a reference to the place where all of the armies are going to meet up to throw down in the final conflict that is called Armageddon. It's not an event, it's a location -- "Meggido" -- and the battle will follow. But neither of those words is in the bible. Hmmm...

Is the use of the name Armageddon just a reference to something commonly understood to be the battle of the end or are JW and other christian groups mis-using this term? Not a big deal bit I figured some of the smarties here would be able to give a non-JW and general heathen by nature a quick explanation.

Thanks for your time and any info.

    Robert -

My church never discusses "Armageddon" or the end times, so I think it depends on which church you attend as to how it is used. For what it is worth, I've never heard of any "church" using "Armageddon" as a drawn-out event, except for the WT, although it wouldn't surprise me if there are others who view it the same way. However, I have heard of it being used as the one last battle of mankind being held in the Meggido Valley, as you mention - which is to take place "in the end times".

IMHO, the WT is too hung up on Armageddon. Faith is faith whether Armageddon is a component or not.

Armageddon came invisibly in 1874 just as predicted by the people who say such things, and the world has been continuously improving since that date and the destruction of wickedness that took place then.

Ask yourself, "Is my life today better than it was in 1874?" YOU BET IT IS! That's because under the benevolent reign of the invisible crowned King, Christ Jesus, mankind has been subjected to many blessings, like triple-distilled vodka.

Eye has not seen and ear has not heard the glorious mysteries that will be revealed in the years to come.

Rev 16:16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.

Or another way to spell it is "Har-Mageddon", which means "mountain of Megiddo".

However, there are no mountains in the valley plain of Megiddo. The place was a crossroad of sorts, and if you conquered it you could control traffic flow and trade in the entire region. Therefore, many decisive battles were fought at Megiddo during ancient times.

Why the "mountain of Megiddo"? Obviously another strange symbolism by the "inspired" writer of the Apocalypse.

Come to think of it, I did feel really good when I got up this morning.

My sister was watching a show either disc.or tlc. where they were talking that the whole rev.scriptures were a dream, of things that were happening at that time. I am wanting to see that show ,but it hasn't been on since. She had mentioned whose dream it was but i can't remember. She said the proof she was shown on this show compared with the rev. scriptures especially armagedden proved to her it is all in a dream.
