That is the idea of Bill Gates, to pay for spam, anyone sending an e-mail will have to pay. It would probably be only a cent or two ( ya right) but many companies and internet services are saying no to this idea. Would you pay to send a e-mail ? I guess nothing in life is free. KLS

I already pay a flat rate for internet access which includes email. I don't see why I should have to pay more.
But if they found a way to make the spammers pay - well I'd much rather make them pay to send us all that crap

no - the spammers would just find a way around it and the normal users would get stuck pouring quarters into Gates' pocket.

I prefer Bill's other idea - making the PC do some calculation before sending... thus choking any PC used for mass mailings with computational lockup.
No matter what, Simple Mail Transport Protocol will have to replaced by something more complicated and more security-minded... which probably means it will be less reliable and break more...sigh.

if only the whole world used Novell GroupWise.
I don't like the idea of paying for email. Don't think it would ever go over. Bill Gate's likes the idea of monopolized communications, but the fact of the matter is that the world won't go that way. Gate's didn't invent the Internet, he just hindered it's progress a little by preventing IT competition as much as possible. Now he's old new, programming is going open source, and no one will stand for paying for email.
I suspect that if email did become a pay-per-post system, then user's would simply go underground and use alternate services based on the freenet relay routing method.

Have y'all heard that SPAM is now appearing in internet Instant Messages?
Really.
The term IT pros have coined for it is SPIM.
Really!

They call them "Pornbots" sometimes too, Nate. Most of them are for adult services. Yahoo has infested with the things for years. I don't know about MSN, ICQ or AIM.

I wouldn't mind if it stopped the spam. I don't send that many emails. A cent or two is all right with me.
