What would be the *real* motive then, if not the library card, for the WTBTS to become an NGO? Is it possible someone got confused or misinformed that they needed to become an NGO to continue with the library? I can't for the life of me figure out the motive. Did being an NGO get them some other perk or status?
NGO Why then?

confusedjw,
If you read the U.N. web site as to why N.G.O.’s affiliate to them you will be able to answer your own question without relying on the apostates here. All the perks are given and it becomes obvious that being an N.G.O. gives added status and credibility to any religion that is affiliated, particularly when it comes to things like negotiating with governments.
That’s just for starters, you will find plenty more reasons if you look at the perks and benefits and think how they would be of use to someone like the Watchtower.

Well, nothing is a certainty, but my likely guess is close to what others have already stated here.
That the time when the WTS joined up with the UN as a NGO was a time when communism was falling in Eastern Europe & the USSR.
THe WTS probably thought [correctly] that some political clout would go a long way to establish the WTS as a religoin in these now infant governments/countries if they were a NGO w/the UN.
Being a NGO could deflect some dissenting talk that JW's don't take blood and let memebers die and JW's are politically uninvolved with government.

Dear Confused,
Welcome to the board! You have come to the right place to get your questions answered. Please feel free to ask whatever you need in order to satisfy your curiosity. There are so many here that want to help and support you, and who can also direct you to places to find additional information. It sounds to me as if this UN thing has got your world spinning - just know that there are many others whose footsteps you are following in, and they are glad to have walked that journey - as difficult as it has been at times. I promise you will find true friends here.
You ask:
What would be the *real* motive then, if not the library card, for the WTBTS to become an NGO? Is it possible someone got confused or misinformed that they needed to become an NGO to continue with the library? I can't for the life of me figure out the motive. In order to answer this question correctly, you need to look at the function of the UN and what the benefits would be for an entity to be motivated to affiliate themselves with them. The simple and hard truth of the matter is that the UN is the most powerful political body in the world. The WT affiliated themselves in order to have influence with this powerful political body. Why? Because they have realized that in order to keep the organization growing, they need to have access to people in other countries who are not allowed religious freedom. The WT knows that the advent of the Internet is a huge factor in the declining numbers in developed nations. (Did you know that they now count people they didn't use to include in their numbers, including infants, in order to bolster their numbers to appear as if they are not losing membership as quickly as they are?) Because of the Internet, JW's log on, do a search on Jehovah's Witnesses or Watchtower, and all their misdeeds pop up for anyone who is interested to read. Although they will do anything to grow the numbers in developed nations, including banning Internet usage if they have to - they know that any real growth they are going to see will be in areas where people are less educated and have little or no Internet access. They need political access - especially to the UN to further their cause - and not for reasons they would want you to believe. If they ever quasi-truthfully admitted to their political affiliations and reasons for doing so, they would say it is in order to advance The Kingdom. However, the truth of the matter is because they are first a publishing corporation (who ranked in the Top 50 companies in the City of New York, over the past several years, btw) and and second a religion. They use "volunteer" labor to produce and print their literature, and "volunteer" labor to distribute it. They have it better than 99.999999% of the corporations in the world who must pay labor costs and payroll taxes out of their pockets, and who can not hide behind relgious laws and tax exemptions. The WT purposefully affiliated themselves with the UN in order to have access to influence political laws and opinions. Not only that, but the WT had to renew their UN affiliation every single year - and the affiliation rules have never changed since the inception of NGO's in 1968.
It is absolutely not possible for the WT to have been misinformed as to library access. There is no requirement for any type of UN affiliation in order to gain access to the library on the UN campus (aka: The Dag Hammarskjold Library). If you chose, you could walk in there today and read anything you wanted or check out anything you wanted. The difference, however, is you may get disfellowshipped for doing so if you were caught. To illustrate even further the deception involved, the UN has "Satellite Depositories" whereby anyone can go in and ask to have specific books/information sent to that library in order to check it out themselves. In other words, there is no need to even go to the UN campus in order to gain access to it's library materials. In fact, there is at least one Depository Library that is closer to Bethel than the UN Campus itself.

I know I have provided overwhelming information for you to research if you desire, however, one reason why I provide it is simply to show you that there IS so much overwhelming information to prove what we are saying about the WT and it's affiliation with the UN, as well as many other WT misdeeds you probably have not even heard about yet. I wish you the very best of luck with your research, confused. If there is anything I can personally do to help you, please do not hesitate to contact me via pm. What's important here is not why, but that they were an NGO in the first place! To me personally, it wouldn't matter a bit if they signed up with the UN to get discount hotdogs outside the UN Headquarters in New York - what matters to me is that the absolutely flagrant hypocrisy they exhibited by branding the UN as the "Harlot" in their literature, liberally hammering it into the head of every single Dub in the world, and then they go behind everyone's back and sign up as an NGO!
It's a case of DO AS I SAY, NOT AS I DO. Coming from people who purport to be the sole channel of "Jehovah", this is even richer.
