didn't immediately report it to authorities, according to the ruling, the organization wasn't responsible for protecting two of its members who claim they were abused by the same person later.

That just makes me sick right there...

    Sincerely,

    District Overbeer

This is a disappointing loss but it is also an opportunity to let the public know that their children are at risk.

The courts are telling the public that they are responsible for their own children,. Therefore this would be a good time for a public education campaign (especially in the Twin Cities) that JW's hide pedophiles and send them to your door. The courts won't hold the Watchtower responsible for their pedophiles, therefore parents should refuse access to JW's when they are in the community.

It should also be told to active JW's that the Watchtower simply doesn't care. Their children can be abused and elders can tell them to shut up about it. So they are better off not letting their children be alone with any witness because if something happens they are on their own.

I pity the children of Jehovah's Witnesses.

I had an idea as I read this post,

at first I felt sickened, then angry ...

    I read this (highlights mine)

St. Paul attorney Jeffrey Anderson, who is representing the two women, said the ruling came as "a deep disappointment" and he expects his clients will appeal.

Anderson said he thinks the ruling gives Jehovah's Witnesses the freedom to live by their own laws and not the rule of mandatory reporting.

I am CDN, and unsure of your laws ..... BUT

isn't there someone we can write, ie, congress, politicians, judges, or someone who we could send a letter to that would inundate them with the innate 'wrong'ness of this decision?

It seems to me that there is a provision for this in the US with this high court, but I'm not sure.

If we could, it would be a tremendous lobby ... just think of it, people from ALL OVER THE WORLD. An international focus on this case!!!

maybe the Washington Post would be interested????????? Come on, journalists and legal and/or other interested folks on the board, what do you think? I know you're out there! (talesin, who reads a lot )

I'm sort of feeling just like cruzanheart..when she said.

one day a case like this will doggedly plow its way to the Supreme Court and THAT'S where the changes will be made.

I still however find the outcome of the case.......disappointing....(sigh)

Just remember that people all over the US are fighting religious organizations that have hidden their dirty laundry, from RCs, to LDS, to WTS, to Baptists, Pentecostals, etc. The important thing is to look at changing the clergy confidientiality clause that prevails in "every" religion and exempts them from reporting abuse and being held accountable legally. I have been trying to get in touch with other organizations in my state that are trying to change this. This is not just a WTS/JW problem.

I hope this doesn't sound like ranting.

Don't count on that happening.............at least not anytime soon. The Supreme Court seems to continually uphold the JW's rights.

When it is appropriate, perhaps we can lend a voice to this. I agree with you, in that this is part of the larger picture. Surely, there are enough voices on this forum to make a difference when the time is right.

If reporting laws are to change at the US Supreme Court level it will have to be in regard to ALL religions in ALL states, not just the WTS and not just in a few states. Otherwise, work on changing the law in your state. Check with the legislature in your area to see what is pending; or groups of non-JWs that are working on changing the reporting laws re clergy in your state.

Some states already have laws requiring clergy to report. I will check and post which ones do/don't. I think Silentlambs has a list on its site.

You will be surprised if you check how many people out there share our feelings re nonreporting of clergy of abuse cases.
