Quotes
I'm reminded of a scene in the movie "The Jerk" starring Steve Martin; wherein he is working as a Carnival Weight/Age guesser.
He slaps his head in the sudden realization: "Oh.... so its a profit deal, huh?" -

Is that for real about the reason behind the magazine named Consolation, or were you taking a little liberty there?
I have no idea really why they named the magazine but the history of the consolation meetings are in the SDA archives. Russell was trained by the Second Adventists and he trained Rutherford and the bunch that were there in the 20's and 30's. Consolation was a term they were used to.
I have some Consolation mags. I'll go look at them and post what I find.

Yes. I thought everybody knew that. That was the purpose of the meetings. The Second Adventists grieved their Great Disappointment. Russell used the meetings to worship and exchange ideas and socialize. It was Rutherford who turned the meetings into mob incitements and it was Knorr that turned them into the sales meetings that we know today.
I have read so much that I don't even remember where I read that. I have read much of Ellen G White's work and she was there with William Miller. I have to think it was in her work I read that. -

Nathan, I looked at the Consolation magazines I have. Just a few random copies from 1941 to 1945. They came after the Golden Age and I see nothing to indicate their purpose was to console anybody. They were used by Rutherford when he was alive to blast the Catholic church and to piss off the Catholic people. It's a wonder some mob didn't hang that bastard.
