My name is Beverly, and I lived in Japan for a few years. I was politely called, "bebarii-san" by my Japanese friends, and by my last name (Japanified: "Sutomuzu-sensei") by students I taught. (Saying a name without "san" or "sensei" attached is considered quite rude over there; for Americans, it feels a bit like walking on eggshells--better not forget!!) English speakers called my Beverly.
But one co-teacher (a great friend ) took much evil delight in calling me merely "bebu"-- especially when we disagreed about anything. "Oh, yeah, right, 'bebu'!" ( <---Her face.)
So, 'bebu' is now my nickname.
