"Also, as reported back in 1960...Dean Acheson declared that our time is 'a period of unequaled instability, unequaled violence.' And he warned: 'I know enough of what is going on to assure you that, in fifteen years from today, this world is going to be too dangerous to live in."

"Also, as reported back in 1960...Dean Acheson declared that our time is a period of unequaled instability, unequaled violence.' Based on what he knew was then going on in the world, it was his conclusion that soon 'this world is going to be too dangerous to live in."

Do not pursue higher education. There is very little time left! Make pioneer service, the full-time ministry with the possibility of Bethel or missionary service, your goal. WT 3/15/1969, page 171

Since there is such a short time left, study no longer than six months with a prospective convert. WT 5/15/1969 page 312

A great crowd of people are confident that great destruction is imminent, which has been a major factor in their decision not to have children. AFAKE 11/8/1974 page 11

Hmm, somewhere on this board I remember a post about the crime rate in the US dropping over the past few years..

I believe that the GB says that it will take some time during the 1000 year reign of Christ to actually become "paradise Earth"..

So, maybe the sign of dropping crime rates can be spun by the GB to mean that Armageddom did indeed come invisibly in 1975, and things are getting better, just as they predicted all along

See, they knew it all along!!! [8>]

Wonder how they are gonna adress the fact that all you apostates just didn't dissapear in 1975 though? Oh well, that's for the GB to figure out... -- New Light will follow when needed, I'm sure --

I took the truth in 1970, the same year I graduated. I had previously made plans to attend university for a 4 year nursing course. The sister studying with me said that I probably wouldn't finish the course before the new system arrived, that doctors and nurses wouldn't be needed there, and that by going to uni. I would probably let my studies go and fall out of the truth. Being naive and trusting, I forfeited my future. Since then I have worked at menial office jobs and cleaning, mostly for brothers ( who I found to take unfair advantage of their workers sometimes. When I meet people and they tell me how much they enjoy their work, I have nothing to say. Afterall, how inspiring is finding new cleaning products. I do feel a certain amount of bitterness for my loss of education because I feel a void inside me that hungers for knowledge. Being close to 50 now, I run into ageism, that even if I trained for a career now, I would have little chance of being hired. I pioneered for many years, at times in difficult circumstances, barely able to afford the necessities of life, let alone any luxuries. It was difficult to put money aside for retirement ( but then I never thought I would see it in this system). The society feels that higher education can cost you your spirituality, but so can working long hours at low paying jobs that make one too tired to attend meetings. Thanks for the rant, needed to get that off my chest.

PS> Why are JWs referred to as "Dubs" here? What does the term mean?

    its_my_life_2001ca,

    Good to meet you.

Being close to 50 now, I run into ageism, that even if I trained for a career now, I would have little chance of being hired.

Got any money saved up???? Kids now gone?? House paid off?? Go get a post secondary education. Is nursing what you like to do? In Ontario Canada just like the rest of North America, they are "screaming" for nurses.

University is not about getting trained for getting a job. Go learn about something that "interests" you. That is what University is all about.

I got my BScH years ago but I am constantly going back and taking short courses on just about everything.

I know many a mother or father who has gone back later in life to obtain the big BA or BSc or MA or Msc etc... Right now, I have one friend going back at the age of 45 to teaching college at University.

Screw "Ageism". Go Learn, learn, learn

    Dear Its,

I can feel your pain. I ended up in banking where I have been a misfit my whole life. I make good money but I am not happy because I am not where I want to be. I just don't relate to the corporate banking world. Like trying to dress up a pig you know.

I suggest that instead of concentrating on an occupation that will make you happy, that you find one or more avocations (hobbies) that fulfill you. It will make you happier without the pressure of trying to readjust your work life (although you might also think of taking some classes in a field that interests you). You will be surprised at how much keeping busy with interesting stuff will change your outlook on life.

In 1975 it was pretty clear to me that the end was no where in sight. I spent the summer at an educational program for gifted students in Georgia called the Governors Honors Program. Only 400 students were picked to attend each year. I went in the Mathematics interest area. It was the best 6 weeks of my life. It was wonderful being around kids who knew so much about stuff I was interested in and liked to talk about it. I was like the dumbest kid there, but I didn't care, I learned a lot. My mother was terrified that armageddon would start while I was away from home. Unfortunately, I went back home and let my friends and family talk me out of scholarship offers and even attending college.

At some point though you have to stop looking back and start looking forward. I attend college now studying Math. I garden, write poetry, work on my web site www.joelbear.com, and do some community service. Whatever you choose to do, remember to LIVE LIFE. It is glorious.

As Auntie Mame said, "Life is a banquet and most the poor suckers are starving to death."

    hugs

    Joel
