I can't figure out if Wal-mart is a force for good or evil. But this article was interesting, and even-handed. It's long, you may not want to read all of it, but worth the effort to get through IMO. Here's the link in case the article doesn't show up: http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/77/walmart.html

OK, this person is a crackpot... a gallon jar of pickles = a years supply. Oh hell no. A gallon jar of pickles in my house lasts about a week. We are pickle lovers... and don't take that the wrong way.

I HATE Wal-Mart! I try not to go there at all. Today, I ventured forth to brave it cause I thought I could get a very costly item alot cheaper by breaking down and going there. After a headache from hell in the parking lot and then ANOTHER headache from hell trying to wind my way through the store, I found they did not have the item! I went to Target, found it after painless parking and although I paid a bit more than I might have at Wal-mart I was happy I got it there instead. I will NEVER step foot in Wal-Mart again! (I said that last year and there I was today but after the crap today I do plan on keeping that vow)

Interesting article. I'm too am not thrilled about Wal-Mart. They try to portray this "All-American" positive image and the reality is far from it. They're very preditory and too big for their pants!

copsec, I try to avoid shopping there when it is at all possible too. It is such a pain in the a$$ to shop there that it's not worth the savings. Their two-fisted methods of dealing with the competition and their own vendors makes it difficult for me to feel comfortable giving them my money.
double-edge, the smiley, cheery commercials are window dressing aren't they? I can't imagine being a buyer for Wal-mart, to be so cold and, well, Nazi-ish in dealing with your vendors.
But, to be fair, not all their vendors hate them and damn their prices sure are good.

Ain't that the truth..... until, they drive all of their competitors out of business and they become the only game in town.

Because of everything that has come to light about Walmart, my bf would prefer I not shop there... wants to support a sort of strike against them for not treating employees proper....
I do really love Pickles though...

In Columbus Ohio where I live, they've put Kmart out of business, and probably played a role in putting Big Bear (grocery chain) under. I know they're putting the hurt on Meijer too.
