I removed the offending carpet and replaced it with tile. Kids and dogs are much easier on tile.

wednesday
We are buying area rugs today until we can replace the carpet. I could not believe that the retailers of the Berber carpet i bought told me to use bleach, and indeed it does work , but i did not think of the long term consequences. We are having to clean about every month to maintain a nice clean carpet. and i don't even have pets in the home. we do love to eat in front of the TV, however.
I like the vinegar idea, it does cut soap..Also, hair conditoner, creme rinse cuts soap residue. just a thought . Since none of the current things one tthe market works very well, and leaves your carpet more likely to pick up dirt. Also, it just occured to me, what about degreaser? a small amout of this might really get out greasy dirt.

We also have the "please leave your shoes at the door" rule. Most everyone in our family follows this same rule when we visit each other. However, there are some who will NOT take their shoes off, even though we ask nicely.
I've noticed that if you request delivery people or repair people to cover their shoes/or remove them, they do usually have these booties that they can put over their shoes if they need to walk through the house. Most are very glad to do so. I have a habit of looking down at their shoes, and if it has been raining, or they are dirty and muddy and have nothing to put on, I go grab two plastic bags for them to put over their shoes. They don't seem to mind at all.

First clean the carpet with a good machine cleaner, then staple it to the ceiling, should stay clean for much longer LOL.
We got rid of our carpets, between dogs and kids, we stick with a patterned area rug, no one can tell the patterns from the permanent stains!
