Is There Really A "Special Relationship" Between The UK and The US?

This term "Special Relationship" is one of the most over-used expressions ever, IMHO.

In the UK, it is used so much to describe our relationship with the US that the phrase is becoming almost farcical.

The movie "Love Actually" poo-poo'd the idea of a special relationship when PM Hugh Grant lambasted his US equivalent as described by one critic here:

Billy Bob Thornton is wasted and rather ineffectual as the US president, a hybrid of Clinton's lasciviousness and Bush's belligerence. Topical as it is to question the dubious and one sidedness of the 'Special Relationship' we are meant to swallow the idea that the PM is goaded into calling it into question in a press conference owing to his char lady being touched up by the Whitehouse incumbent.

So what do you think? Is this special relationship a one sided affair? Is the price of a special relationship with the US too high?

Very interesting, do you agree? As Gomer Pyle would say, surprise, surprise!

Everyone knows that Blair is Bush's lap-dog.

Yes there is a close relationship. The U.S. and Britain are the Anglo-American Dual World Power represented in Revelation by the Wild Beast which will ... soon ... ummm ... erm ...

    Never mind.

The special relationship is extremely one sided.

When Britain went to war with Argentina, our "friend" was nowhere to be seen.

When America went charging into Iraq ... there was Blair like a bloody lap dog.

Technically correct but utter shit if you read history and watch the History Channel -- the UK was given US Military satellite access and "other help" - so technically yes the help was nowhere to be seen

We don't hear that term used in the US. Not that I have heard anyway. We are staunchly independant with due respect to Britain as our "Mother Country".

There is still fresh in mind world war Two. We all did a good thing, faught valiantly and have much to be proud of. In that aspect, yes we feel connected.

But to be perfectly honest, America bashing as a new pastime is like slapping a skeeter at a good bbq.A minor annoyance but not worth changing over.
