So How Good Was Roy Orbison Then?

I've got loads of his stuff.

I particularly liked him when he was playing with the Travelling Wilburys. Tom Petty, George Harrison & Bob Dylan along with Orbison, jamming in a warehouse while singing "Handle with care".

Yet..I always had this sneaky feeling that he was struggling to stay in tune and that his golden voice covered over the glitches.

I recently downloaded him singing "Bridge over troubled water" accompanied by The Mavericks. It's very much Orbison as he employs his remarkable timbre to cover the difficult notes, but this time it doesn't come off at all well.

BTW, I can only sing in tune after 4 or 5 pints and then I have a sneaking suspicion that my voice stays the same but that my ears become less fussy.

    Whaddyathink?

Was Roy good, bad or indifferent?

Good question. Though he was old enough to be my daddy, I thought he was soooo romantic. :)

    LMAO on that one!

At the risk of being stoned for heresy...I never got the Roy Orbison thing. He was alright with the TW's, but I never enjoyed his music when he was solo. Different tastes for different folks...that's what makes the world go 'round. Regards.

I have quite a bit of Roy's music. What led me to him, "Blue Bayou" and "Crying" performed by other people.

    Roy was indeed the boy.

What got me was how could he see where he was going with those goggles on they were extremly dark but what a voice. Like Englishman I have had a shot at trying to be Roy at the Karaoke and after a few jars I am indeed Roy Orbison re-incarnate, amazing.

Roy had a very unique sounding voice. If it wasn't for just the sound of his voice, he probably wouldn't be a great singer. As far as his singing ability goes, there wasn't anything spectacular about it. Just the way he sounded was what made him stand out.

BTW, I am a Roy Orbison fan :)

I think you are mistaken. The singer for the Mavericks is Raul Malo and his voice sounds very much like Roy Orbison. Good Band.

It's Roy sure enough. If you go into any of the shared files and type it in on a search it will come up.

I just tried to copy the titles on WinMX but it won't let me block it in. It says Roy Orbison & the Mavericks.

It probably does say that because he sounds so similar. WINMX file labels are not gospel. The mavericks formed after Orbison died. Try searching for Mavericks-Foolish Heart or Here comes the rain, and you'll see what I mean voice wise.
