Either I've missed it or we haven't talked about the death of former NFL player turned Army Ranger Specialist Pat Tillman in Afghanistan.

This guy represents what's right about america. He had money and fame and wanted to give back to the country after 9-11. I'm proud of people like him...and there are thousands of them here in the military...people who left homes and families...and sometimes good jobs...to do something important.

On a side note....I was worried that with as hard as we're driving the force that retention in the military was going to be a problem...thus far this year the Army has exceeded it's goal of retention by a couple of 100 soldiers...the Marines....have retained 90% of the goal for the year in the first six months. These are dedicated people we're talking about here. I'm proud of the military.

I have such a high regard for men like Pat Tillman, yourself, my nephew (a brand new Marine) and all of our Armed Forces. Thank goodness there are people like you left in the world! I know I have told you before, but thank you, I appreciate you and what you do for our country.

Wow, thats a pretty damn good set of stats there. I'm afraid i have to agree with you, i am proud of the military and i am proud of everybody who has fought so hard to defend us. I can't wait until i'm part of that team xLaura x

Pat was a stand up guy for sure. He turned away great money to go serve this country. Out of loyalty towards his football team, he even turned down a $9 million contract with another team. He stood for what he believed in. Good for him.

It's difficult to lose someone with that kind of character. Obviously Pat didn't go into the Army because they offered a good deal, he already had a better deal. He enlisted because he thought it was the right thing to do. That seems rare in this day and time but as Yeru pointed out the armed services are holding their own as far as re-enlistments rates are concerned, which indicates there are many people out there wanting to do the right thilng. Pat Tillman walked away from the life of wealth and media coverage to do what he felt was right. The world needs hero's like him. I am only sad I didn't know about his story until he passed on.

I got a lump in my throat when I read about his joining the military a couple of years ago, and I got tears in my eyes on learning of his death.

Pat Tillman, I've seen, was not some gung-ho dumb jock who got pissed off at the A-rabs when 9/11 happened. Rather, he was a smart tough man who became a smart tough warrior when he saw that he was needed. He was in the rare position of not even needing to ask what his country could do for him, as he pretty much "had it all", and he left behind fame, more fortune, comfort, and his many family and friends to do what he could for his country.

I was very saddened to hear this news yesterday.

It was very impressive to me that he gave up all the money, the sport he loved all of it because he was so moved over the 9/11 tragedy.

It has been the subject of talk with my son and his friends and it does his sacrifice does make the kids around here stand up and listen. It is good to see people , no matter what field of life they are in, to take a stand and stand up for what they believe in. I really feel sad for his family,,,,if it would have been my son, I would honestly try to talk him out of it. But I know when your son wants to do what he feels is right , you just have to back them up.

A standup guy, he will be missed. Its good to know there are still people out there that understand what it takes to provide freedom, and the price it costs to obtain it.
