i've organized several donations drives for children's hospitals in the past 2+ years, and found it more rewarding than i can explain. if you want more info celtic you can pm me for details.
i hate the jw attitude toward charities, why contribute to anything but the society when jehovah will fix it all? *gag* that doesn't do any good in the meantime (if it ever was going to happen...not!) does it?

Ask your local service groups (Kiwanis, Lions, etc.) what they our doing. If they have a project you want to get behind great. Otherwise, ask if they would be willing to get behind the project you would like to do. Every group is different, so make sure you find one that is active or welling to be active.
