Silvia Patterson has been baptised for a little over a year. She has successfully put on the new personality and her spiritual suit of armor is nearly unpenetratable. She goes out in service regularly and has just applied to auxilary pioneer. Last thursday at the meeting, she gave her first impromptu talk. Sister Patterson is quite proud of herself because she feels that she has successfully made the transformation from wordly person to strong spiritual sister. When "wordly" individuals talk to her they comment to themselves "man, has she changed!"

New Silvia's thinking: I'm not coming to the wedding because it is in a church.

Silvia catches part of the Dateline report about child abuse among Witnesses.

Old Siliva's thinking: That's ridiculous! I can't believe they dont report those bastards!

New Silvia's thinking: It's Satan manipulating the media again!

No wonder many ex witnesses compare life in the org with the novel 1984, suddenly you are taught things that wouldnt make any sense to the normal person. Lies are taught a truth and vise-versa.

Kind of creepy to think that so many of us could be trained /indoctrinated to think that way. Can you say "brain-washing?"

Looking at it now, from the outside, it all sounds so crazy. But that was the "reality" we accepted, right? Kind of like The Matrix.

It's November--holidays are coming up. It'll be great to see the family again--I always love this time of year.

Holidays are coming up again. It is so wonderful to be free from pagan celebrations. For the next two months, I'll have to avoid my family, none of whom are in the truth. New Silvia: I better decline because the new position would interefere with meeting nights and I'll have to work weekends which means I can't go in service

How about JWs that defend/lie for the org?

I just got an email from a JW "friend" who said he doesn't want me to talk to him any more. He read a short bio I put on my high school class web site about how "I didn't go to college because it was basically against the rules of my former religion."

He said I was twisting the beliefs of the JWs and quoted a 1999 Watchtower that said college was ok.

I told him "You know very well that back when we were in high school [early 90s] that college was effectively not an option. I can't think of a single JW our age that went to college right after high school."

The WTS was very against college until 1992 when they published a study article. That's when they changed and said it'd be ok to get limited higher education but only for the purpose of supporting yourself in the full time ministry. This article came out when I was a senior, but it was too late... no preparations were made for college. Plus the actual attitude people had about college still took a few years to change. My parents were still adamant about no college.

Sigh...defending the org no matter what. I did the same thing when I was in high school though. One teacher asked if my decision to not go to college was because of my religion. I said "of course not!"

Heeheehee, good thread, I'm going to be thinking about old and new sylvia all night. Wish I had a sylvia story to contribute but my imagination has conked out on me. I'll probably think of one after the thread has run it's course. That always happens to me. Sick

Old Sylvia:

Great--I'm really attracted to him, and I've been dying to see the movie. What should I wear?

New Sylvia:

He's part of the world; it would be wrong in Jehovah's eyes. Besides, even if he was in the truth, courship should take only take place if he has marriage in mind, and a chaperone should be present at all times so that we will not be tempted engage in passionate kissing and petting, which could eventually lead to fornication.
