Getting completely and totally legless at Friday lunch time, being woken up at midnight by the bus driver at a bus depot two hours away from where you live, sleeping in the park, and when you finally get home finding that your face has been painted blue. And doing it all again on Saturday night.

Or is that not the sort of thing you meant?

Some of my ancestors are from Ripon and Harrogate. I thought the Bronte's were from that area. Or is it the same?

Ripon and Harrogate are cities that are quite close to Haworth, which is little bigger than a village. They're all in the County of Yorkshire, so it's quite likely that the Bronte sisters lived in those places for a time. Mike.

    Cool pictures, Englishman!

I visited Haworth, Ripon and Harrogate when I went to England with my sister. We toured Bronte Parsonage. We traveled all over Yorkshire. We visited Thirsk and Richmond, too. York was a cool city as well.

Anyone there James Herriott fans here?

We came back to the States as "tea snobs", drinking Yorkshire tea.

Now, here we are, back in the flat land of Illinios....

    maybe's :

Brother Waddington was my CO and VERY good friends with my Uncle. I found him to be quite a character. I remember one time he was on his way to give a talk and was in an accident. Not too serious, but Sister Waddington was injured. We drove her to the hospital and dropped him off at the Kingdom Hall so he could give his talk and he went to the hospital after his talk to receive the medical attention he needed. :)

Holy cow Chevys, thats incredible! Could it be that I knew you in my former dub life? Well, Brother Waddington was pretty well known as an eccentric, so does that count as a wonderful english custom, eccentricity?

Up in that olde country of merry england in the county of Devon across the border from the country of Cornwall they have a rather eccentric tradition stretching back a few or so centuries.

In essence not long after dusk in the town of Ottery St. Mary, all 17 pubs in the town sponsor a tar coated 30 kilogram barrel which is then lit, and hoisted onto the backs of the local 'boys' to run precariously through the town centre with the crowds cheering wildly on. It is thought that the practice in fact goes back to pagan times when such was done to ward off evil spirits and as a cleansing exercise.
